Notes

Summary:
Diaries and journals. All these diaries are related to the households of the Dow and Davison families of Pensacola. Dow's diaries contain his first impressions of Pensacola, when he came to work in the Navy Yard in 1849. His wife, in her 1855 diary, writes at greater length about her daily visits and life in town. William Henry Davison, a Harvard graduate who had studied poetry under Lowell and Longfellow, came south to Pensacola in the early 1850s to set up work as a civil engineer. He met and married Dow's widow in 1860. Davison remained in Pensacola until his death in 1916 and his diaries are filled with lengthy entries about his survey work, his experiences as a quarantine officer charged with fumigating ships to prevent yellow fever, and various travels.
Summary:
As a civil engineer, Davison was also fascinated with the plat maps and city surveys of Sebastian Pintado, the last colonial surveyor for Pensacola, and made a study of Pintado's works. In combination, these diaries cover the pre-Civil War days when Pensacola was struggling to revive its status as a major shipping and ship-building center and the post-war period in which it suffered hard times. The Civil War is not covered in these diaries.
Summary:
The Warren Q. Dow diaries consist of 4 volumes, dating from 1848-1850, 1854, 1855, 1857. The William Henry Davison diaries are 10 small volumes, 1852, 1855, 1868, 1870, 1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, and 1876 (2 vols.), 1 loose-leaf notebook diary, 1886, 1 large ledger style diary, 1890, and 1 small survey book, 1876. The diary of Mrs. Warren R. Dow consists of 1 volume, dated 1855.
