Summary:
Diaries and journals. All these diaries are related to the households of the Dow and Davison families of Pensacola. Dow's diaries contain his first impressions of Pensacola, when he came to work in the Navy Yard in 1849. His wife, in her 1855 diary, writes at greater length about her daily visits and life in town. William Henry Davison, a Harvard graduate who had studied poetry under Lowell and Longfellow, came south to Pensacola in the early 1850s to set up work as a civil engineer. He met and married Dow's widow in 1860. Davison remained in Pensacola until his death in 1916 and his diaries are filled with lengthy entries about his survey work, his experiences as a quarantine officer charged with fumigating ships to prevent yellow fever, and various travels.
Summary:
As a civil engineer, Davison was also fascinated with the plat maps and city surveys of Sebastian Pintado, the last colonial surveyor for Pensacola, and made a study of Pintado's works. In combination, these diaries cover the pre-Civil War days when Pensacola was struggling to revive its status as a major shipping and ship-building center and the post-war period in which it suffered hard times. The Civil War is not covered in these diaries.

The Warren Q. Dow diaries consist of 4 volumes, dating from 1848-1850, 1854, 1855, 1857. The William Henry Davison diaries are 10 small volumes, 1852, 1855, 1868, 1870, 1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, and 1876 (2 vols.), 1 loose-leaf notebook diary, 1886, 1 large ledger style diary, 1890, and 1 small survey book, 1876. The diary of Mrs. Warren R. Dow consists of 1 volume, dated 1855.

LETTERS TO ANY PART OF THE UNITED STATES, 3 cents for
each 1-2 ounce or part thereof.
DROP LETTERS, 2 cents.
VALUABLE LETTERS may be registered on application at the of-
fice of mailing, and the payment of a registration fee not exceeding
15 cents.
TRANSIENT NEWSPAPERS, Periodicals, Pamphlets, Blanks, Proof
Sheets, Book Manuscripts, and all mailable printed matter, (except
circulars and books,) 2 cents for each and every 4 ounces. Double
these rates are charged for Books.
UNSEALED CIRCULARS, (to one address,) not exceeding 3 in num.
ber, 2 cents, and in the same proportion for a greater number.
SEEDS, CUTTINGS, ROOTS, etc., 2 cents for each 4 ounces or less
quantity.
ALL PACKAGES of Mail Matter not charged with letter postage
must be so arranged that the same can be conveniently examined
by Postmasters; if not, letter postage will be charged.
No PACKAGE will lie forwarded by mail which weighs over 4
pounds.
ALL POSTAGE MATTER, for delivery within the United States,
must be PREPAID by stamps, except duly certified letters of sol.
diers and sailors.
LETTERS TO CANADA and other British North-American Prov-
inces, when not over 3000 miles, 10 cents for each 1-2'ounce. When
over 3000 miles, 15 cents. Prepayment optional.
LETTERS TO GREAT BRITAIN OR IRELAND, 6 cents. Prepay-
