Abstract:
I submit this project in lieu of thesis as a Master of Fine Arts candidate. This is the discussion of the design process for Urinetown: The Musical by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann as produced by the University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance, located in Gainesville, Florida. Under the direction of Charlie Mitchell, this production took place in the Constans Theatre in October 2012, with a design process that began in March 2012 and continued until early September 2012. The design process involved three formal design meetings, numerous individual meetings with the director, fellow designers, and advisors, and informal design meetings between the design team. An account of these meetings, the evolution of the set through multiple redesigns, and the final product are included, as well as documentation of the build process and discussion of the changes the show went through are included. Also included is a discussion of the successes of the show and difficulties faced that would be changed if the show were to be redesigned again in the future.
