VOL. 1/ISSUE 46 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2013 35 cents Theres been a dearth of air shows for the last few months, but thats about to change. Three shows are scheduled for the Space and Treasure coasts in the next few weeks. Air shows have been unusually quiet in Florida since spring, Bryan Lilley, owner of B. Lilley Productions, said. The company specializes in air shows. Normally thered be 15 (in Flor ida) from March to November, he said. Sequestration canceled a lot of air shows. Put simply, the federal budget sequestration grounded the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels. Those crack demonstration teams are the air show rock stars. Without them, tick ets just dont sell nearly as well. Lilley said a number of promoters shut down shows rather than go the 2013 season without the elite ers. Back on March 1, Maj. Darrick Lee, Thunderbirds public affairs, announced that the air-demonstration team would be grounded after April 1 due to the feder al-budget sequestration. The Blue Angels soon followed with a similar announcement. Turned out the last anyone saw of the Thunderbirds for the 2013 air-show season was at the 36th annual Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum & TICO Air Show, Titusville, March 22 to 24. It was a record-breaking crowd, Terry Yon, former public said in a previous interview. The Thunderbirds really brought the crowds in. Lilley had the Thunderbirds scheduled for the October Cocoa Beach Air & Space Show. In April derbirds would be back on the show. Theyre not, and that show was canceled. After the Cocoa Beach show was canceled, Lilley helped organize the Melbourne Air & Space Show. is the Vero Beach Air Show. Thats a long unheard name to many. years, Marty Zickert, president of the Veterans Council of Indian River County, said. That show will be on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6, at the Vero Beach Municipal Airport, Air show dearth ends for now Patrick McCallisterFOR VETERAN VOICEpatrick.mccallister@yahoo.com Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer See AIRSHOWS page 4 5743 Who got the better of the Syrian situation so far, Obama or Putin?Send your thoughts to:info@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a narrow focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from lead ers of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice. We hope you agree, and will support this publica tion with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, readers and subscribers. Among other things, the state veterans department operates six nursing homes with 120 beds each, and an assisted living facil ity with 150. The nursing homes are, by far, the FDVAs largest function. Previously, Congress passed and the president signed the Budget Control Act of 2011. The Reduction, often called the super committee, formed to work out a deal for Congress to raise the fed eral governments debt ceiling to avoid sovereign default on previ ously-appropriated spending. The committee hatched the idea of giving Congress and President Barack Obama a frightening prospect if they couldnt agree on budget cuts and revenue increases sequestration, automatic across-the-board spending cuts over 10 years accompanied by expiring tax reductions. Many believed the prospect of an acrossthe-board budget cuts that could send the nation into recession would force Congress and the president to work toward more agreeable solutions. While some compromises have happened, the Congress and White House are still locked in budget battles that have brought on the budget sequestration. The 2013-2014 budget years starts in October. A spokesperson for the Thunderbirds said the team is practicing for shows next year, but not making schedule commitments until further notice. Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer AIRSHOWS from page 1

VETERAN VOICE THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE SEPTEMBER 20, 2013 7Area vet wins bridge logo design contestMARTIN COUNTY And the winner is the National Guard sergeant who designed the logo for the Veterans Memorial Bridge while he was serving in Afghani stan. True story. In my spare time, I worked on it a little bit, Mickey Planker, Stuart, said. Planker was among about 75 artists who submitted logos to the contest last month. He had a good piece of art and a really cool story, Beth Zsoka, bridge project public information The Stuart man, along with the rest of the Florida Nation al Guards 806th Military Police Company, returned home on Aug. 23 from a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The company is stationed in Fort Pierce. All submissions to the Bridge Event Planning Committees contest had to be in by Aug. 30. Planker learned about the contest to design the bridge logo from friends emails. As he went to work on it, a few ideas weighed on the artists mind. He wanted a patriotic theme minus the overwhelming glitz and glare. His logo featured numer ous occurrences of reds, whites and blues, but in varying shades offset by other tones. Planker wanted to pay tribute to fallen service members without sadness. That he did by adding said. His logo also features numerous environmental images, including trees and a sailboat. Planker said getting the environmental images was important because of current events. (The contest) was going down when they were releasing millions of gallons of water out of Lake Okeechobee, he said. 8 SEPTEMBER 20, 2013 VETERAN VOICE THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE approved about $100,000 for an independent study to determine whether a new veteran nursing home is needed, and if so where it should go. Haddox wasnt aware of that when he asked for the county commissions backing to assemble a steering committee to lobbying effort. He was a county for about 13 years before retiring and running for the commission in 2012. Haddox said it long seemed to him that Indiantown was the logical next place to build a veterans nursing home. To me its important to pursue this, because were in an area between Pembroke Pines and Daytona, he said. The closest veteran nursing home to the Treasure Coast is the Alexander Sandy Nininger Veterans Nursing Home, 8401 W. Cypress Drive, Pembroke Pines. The next closest is the Emory L. Bennett State Veterans Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Dayto na Beach. Bennett was built in 1993. Nininger in 2001. Steve Murray, communications director for the FDVA, said the last home was built in 2010. That was (the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans Nursing Home) in St. Augustine, he said. Murray said that the last home cost about $30 million to build. The state paid about 35 percent of the costs. The federal Depart ment of Veterans Affairs which is separate from the state vet erans agency paid about 65 percent of the costs. Murray said the FDVA has the needed money for its share to go forward with building a state veterans nursing home, because of changes the legislature made to its trust funds last session. He said its far too soon to say whether Martin County could be where the next home is built. Well take the results of the re port and deliver it to the governor and cabinet with our recommendations and well go from there, Murray said. The homes employ about 160 to 170 each, Murray said. Haddox said those jobs could have a huge affect on Indiantowns economy. McDonalds and Dollar General recently built locations in Indian town. development in 20 years, Had dox said. Haddox hopes to get the Florida Veterans Council, the West Palm Beach Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, area counties and others to support Martins bid for the next state veterans home. Murray said when the department announces plans to build a new veterans home, things often get heated. Counties sometimes compete against each other to get one, he said. Haddox said thats why its important for Martin to get ready now and convince surrounding counties to back its bid for a vet erans nursing home. My big concern is another county will see this and say, We want it; why should you get it? Haddox said. If St. Lucie or Indian River jump in, shame on them. Theyll start a turf war. Itll probably destroy it for all of us. (Martin is) sitting where we need to.
