Garren Cone president of the American Veterans Empowerment Team Project at Patrick Air Force Base has been talking with Posey about the cost not-forcare packages to overseas service members. Posey, R-Rockledge, asked some United States Postal Ser vice and Department of Defense brass about reducing or eliminating those costs by putting care packages on military permits. We send planes over (to Af ghanistan) half full, he said. Every time we asked about it before, they said, We dont have the authority, (I said) Ill give you the authority. Earlier this year, the Congressman introduced the Deployed Troops Support Act of 2013 to fense to transport to any country, without charge, supplies that have been furnished by a are intended for distribution to members of the Armed Forces. Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a narrow focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from lead ers of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice. We hope you agree, and will support this publica tion with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, our readers and subscribers. However, Posey said theres been no opposition to the amendment in the Senate. I consider it a done deal, he said. As soon as (President Barack Obama) signs it. Posey said the act wont necessarily eliminate all costs notship care packages to service members. He noted that the Defense to examine ways to ship those packages without charging the senders. Cone said its still good news. For the last three years, the cost of a box going to the troops has gone up three times, he said. Among other things, AVET has shipped care packages, what it calls empowerment kits, to service members in Afghanistan for about three years. He said AVET has shipped thousands of packages to service members in Operation Enduring Freedom from Florida and Oregon. Cone said the average cost of a box would be about $50, except for the $14.85 charge for sending the United States Postal Service. That adds about 30 percent to the cost AVETs donors must raise to send the packages. 12-inch squares, 8 inches deep. Theres also a rectangular version Those shipping charges have stuck in Cones craw. VETERAN VOICE THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE JULY 5, 2013 7 25. Brady said an employee wrongly cut her off from shipping all the packages to service members. The United States Postal Service that events happened generally as Brady said. Her shipping was cut short. In fairness, Brady said she ar minutes before closing. The USPS utes before closing. Additionally, a postal employee was taken off his regular duties to assist her. Nevertheless, that was that mat ter of a postal employee cutting the shipment short. I wont go back there again, Brady said in a telephone inter view a few days after the incident. The spats settled now, but there are some important lessons for folks who send care packages to service members. If one gets to a ees are supposed to stay at the task of prepping packages until the last. But, its a good idea to packages will need in the way of long before closing, and take ad vantage of offerings at USPS.com. The Postmaster called me yesterday and met with me today wrote in a Facebook post after the interview that got Veteran Voice involved. Hes new and trying hard to put a positive spin on the Brady said 27 of the packages she had were ready with the A woman Brady at the time thought was the postmaster shut down part of the mailing. I told her this was the last day I had to mail these so theyd get to the troops in time for July 4, Brady said. No dice. Brady said the woman ble to keep, and shed passed it. What a postal worker told me is she is new and hes never heard of this before, Brady said. He said, This is BS youre being thrown out of here. Turned out that the postal worker was not only new, but on temporary assignment. Enola Rice, spokeswoman for the USPS, said that Brady was correct that workers were supposed to complete the mailing. However, the delivery truck could leave on time whether or not all the days mail was on it. nience that Ms. Brady experi enced during her recent visit to emailed response to queries. Her entire mailing should have been processed and mailed. We appreciate the fact that this incident was called to our attention so that we can take corrective action to prevent such occurrences in the future. In a telephone interview, Rice added, (The worker) wasnt aware of the policy. She should have been aware, but shes aware of it now. Spat was over at that point, said Brady. It makes me very happy that theyre on the side of the custom er in abiding by their rules, she said in a follow-up interview. I appreciate the apology. Brady started OASIS about six years ago. She said its prepared and mailed a couple thousand of packages to service members in operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Most are hol iday theme packages. The Independence Day ones had a poker theme: cards, chips, cigars. We try to do fun packages for the troops to keep their mind off the dreary situation theyre in, Brady said. Shes only encountered one other unpleasant situation at a packages. That one, too, hapIt was a couple years ago. Rice said that the USPS is very favorable to individuals and groups sending care packages to service members. After all, she noted, nationally about 108,000 of its employees are veterans. One of them is the Titusville Post Master, Brady said in her Face book post. He himself is a veteran, and he thanked OASIS for supporting our troops, she wrote. So they have redeemed themselves and hopefully everyone learned something from this. Rice said its always best to have all paperwork for packages completed before going to a lobbies and can be picked up in advance of mailings. Rice added that people have busy lives. We also want to remind customers that our website com provides the opportunity to send mail and packages from their home or business, elimi she wrote in the email. Custom ers can weigh their packages at out customs forms and pay for postage. The packages are picked up free of charge by their letter carrier the next day. Brady had another tip for vet erans and their supporters who encounter problems. Dont go postal, go media, she said. VETERAN VOICE THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE JULY 5, 2013 11 Photo by Domenick Scarlato Brian and Conrad Kusel are two brothers who followed their fathers footsteps to become dentists. They took over their fathers long-standing dental practice in Port St. Lucie. Each brother always felt their good fortune was the blessings America had given their family and all the veterans who served in the military. They always wanted to do something special to honor the men and women who served honorably in Americas armed forces. With this in mind, they created a Wall of Honor in their waiting Wall consists of 82 5-by-7 photos of the men and women in their uniforms during the time they served in the Army, Navy, Ma rines, Air Force and Coast Guard. be proud to see the reverence the Wall of Honor portrays. Also, these two patriot brothers have honored Americas military by giving an outdoor buffet party with entertainment in their park the last few years. Three cheers are in order for these patriotic dentists. Wall of Honor Cadet commander Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer 4368 MISCELLANEOUS AT&T U-Verse for just $29/mo!
