Notes

Abstract:
A single man overlooking the deep Culebra Cut and its construction materials, with Gold Hill on the right and Contractor's Hill on the left.
Scope and Content:
B. L. Singley founded The Keystone View Company in 1892 in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The company quickly became the world's largest view company, having at least 250,000 negatives (of which some 50,000 were available as numbered views) by the 1930s. These images were meant to bring international experiences into the palm of the average person's hand, to be revisted in private or during social gatherings. It has been said that the ability of the stereograph to bring vicarious experiences to faraway people makes this medium parallel to the internet or television today. The Keystone View Company also focused on the educational value of their products, employing teams of people to write explanatory texts that were printed on the backs of the stereograph cards. This text, along with the imagery, presents the dominant vision of American ideals and interests during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. 7 739-Gold Hill on the Right and Contractor's Hill on the Left, Culebra Cut, Panama Canal.

Culebra Cut is the name given to that
portion of the Panama Canal extending from
the head-waters of the large artificial Gatun
Lake to the Pedro Miguel Locks which open
into Miraflores Lake. The Cut will be
nearly nine miles long, extending from the
town of Bas Obispo on the north to Pedro
Miguel on the south. Other towns along
the Cut are Las Cascadas, Empire, Culebra
and Paraiso.
There are eight angles or turns in the
direction of the Canal through Culebra Cut,
or about one to every mile; one of these
angles is shown in this view. A minimum

bottom width of 300 feet is maintained in
the Cut; of course this minimum width is
increased at the arlgles, as shown in this
view, to allow for the turning of a vessel
with the length of I,ooo feet.
As the Cut follows the river valleys as far
as possible the depth of the excavating be-
comes greatest when the continental divide
is reached. The divide is crossed between
Gold Hill and Contractor's Hill; the former
is shown to the right in the picture, and the
latter to the left. Gold Hill is somewhat
higher than the other.
