re! exclaimed our tourist friend
at the hotel in Port.au.Prince.
-...While you were gone, we took
.ti up to Kenscoff an-l saw
a. real Rara. bande! We even got
some pictures of the leader in
hils red and gold uniform!*
.- aDid he have one of these".
Sour young son asked, holding up
a brightly painted baton.
a-Why yes, he did; where in
the .world did you buy it'0.
,Well, I said reluctantly-ior
our friend was genuinely fond
of Haiti and at the moment ter-
ribly 'excited, awe didn't buy
-it, exactly. We -ah -picked up
some Rara dancers outside. Les
-Cayes and gave them a lift' to
the big gathering at Leogane. It"
.was raining, you see-3
: aYou had them in your car?"
The good lady's mouth actually
dropped open .
: FI,. 'had to smile. aQuite a few
of them, the who'.e afternoon.
We learned some of their songs
and stopped in Fond des Negres
for coffee with friends of theirs.
...and when we dropped them
off, the RoL de la Bande, the one
you call the leader, insisted on
Giving Ken his baton.
Rara is -Haiti's most colorful
folk ,'festiVal A strange blend
of folklore and Christianity, witnl
'undertones of voodooism, it be-
gins officially on Good Eriday
S and continues through Easter
Sunday. During those three days
and for a good while before
that, while -rehearsing, --noisy
bands of peasants troop aloIng
the country roads to the rhythm
of the vaccines; long bap-iboo tu-
Sbes that are blown into and tap-
ped with sticks. Singing and dan
* cing are uninhibited. The costu-
mes of the leaders are wondaer-
fully fanciful. Effigies of Judas
are dragged or carried by some
of the bandes and, 'on Easthr
SSunday, aput to deafhs.

<.:but->-this festival is essential-

see little of it.
SOur friend sighed. xI should
have gone with you. What a fool
I was not to!.
-.Had she gone with u she
would have seen-on that single
short excursion-the south coast
city of Les Cayes with its beau-
tiful church; the lovely little is-
land or La Vache, which the hue
cancer Henry Morgan knew so
well; the improbable and specta-
cular mountain road between
Les Cayes and Jkremie; the in-
teresting old town of J&6mie it-
self. She would have gone ba-
thing at delightful Anse d'Azur
khd-thbughit'l"etlf boh an muni-
habited South Sea -isle. She
would have head the whoom-
ping of the bamboo vaccines
and the chanting of Rara ban-
des all the way home.
Of course, the' food in her
Port-au-Prince hotel was better
than our little pensions served
at Les Cayes and Jdrmie,- And
she had, not had to contend with
bad roads, dust, mvd, and peo'
pie whose Creole she could..not
understand. But she had not co-
me to Haiti just to dine well and
go shopping. ..She. Jlonged to
know something about the count
