SAINT MARC

CITY WITH THE .. MOST TURBULENT HISTORY

The city .of..- Saint-Marc.
second in importance of.the De
apartment of the Artibonite has
a population of ten thousand
inhabitants. IX is the seat of the
Prefecture, a Civil Court, the
Land Tribunal of the Valley of
the Artibonite, a Justice of the
Peace, a Scholastic Inspection
and its history is one of the
most dramatic of any town in
the Republic.
The city of St-Marc, situated
on the site of the former
founded under the French col-
onialists by the 'sailors from
lonialists 'by the sailors from
'the port of Dieppe, in France,
several years before th6 found-
ing of Port-au-Prince, the pre-
sent Capital of the Republic of
Haiti.
The first French establish-
ments of Saint-Marc go back,
in effect, to.the year 1716 when
the first Chapel was consecra-
ted to the Apostle Saint-Marc.
The legend even has it that a
statue of St. Marc, sculptured
in wood, was washed up on the
shore coming f r o m the
prow of a ship which had sunk
to the bottom of the Atlantic
Ocean. It. was because of this
incident that the city was
christened Saint Marc.
Originally; the city consisted
only of a series of buildings
placed without order on the
shore between two rivers, separ
ated by narrow and irregular
streets. It soon took on consi-
derable importance thanks to
the situation of its seaport, a
natural outlet for the products
from the plantations of the
.ast Artibonite Plain (coffee,
c,'rton, sugar, indigo, etc.)..
Today the coffee of Saint-
Marc is still reputed through-
out the world.
The city which has been des-
troyed several times still has
a number of very ancient stone
buildings, slate-colored, in aes-
sentesq or in tiles, mute testimo
nial of its past glory of colo-
nial times.
On February 24, 1802, Des-
salines who owned a beautiful
palace there, .personally ap-
plied the torch giving the signal
for the total destruction of a
place which he did not wish to
surrender intact to the invad-
ing French fleet commanded
by General Leclerc, Bonapar-
te's sqn-in-law..
Later, Dessalines had a part
of the material removed and
transported it to the interior of

constitutes one of the largest
bays of the entire isle of Haiti.
The history of St. Marc is
one of the most turbulent tha,
could ever be conceived.
Each stone of the city, each
street, each old house have
been witnesses of heroic and
tragic events. A good guide
could still show visitors the
spot where the cGrande As-
semblee Frangaisea of San Do-
mingue was located, La Mai-
son de Forcei, of the 18th Cen-
tury which services still as the
penitentiary of the city, the
old church bell the gbngs
of which- called the volunteers
together ready to depart for
the battle fields of the Ameri-
can War of Independence.
Several of these volunteers
who won glory notably at Sa-
vannah" were even bora in the
town of St. Marc. Besides this
fact, the inhabitants of Saint-
Marc has other close ties with
the United States of America.
In our time, you can encoun-'
ter at Sairrt-Marc a number
of the descendants of the 1500
immigrants from Louisiana
who came to live there or. the
solliciting of President Gef-
frard, in 1-860. Up until the1
oast several years, one still
could meet some -of these- old
immigrants from Louisiana
who still speak English and
the Louisiana Creole.

The tourist passes through

the Schweitzer Hospital,
funded in 1955 by Dr. and
rs. Lorimer Mellon for the

benefit of the peasant popula-
tion of the Artibonite Valley.
Visitors on their way to
Deschapelles should stop over
a bit in St. Marc.in order to
visit the ruins, still 'standing,
of the ancient palace of King
Christophe, the Blockauss Fort
which recalls the memory of
Thomas Brisbane (English Co-
lonel and great uncle of Wins-
ton Churchill) who fought a
great battle but lost it to Tous-
saint Louverfure, the vanqui-
sher.
As for its natural 'beauty, the
tourist may admire in the
heights of St. Marc; besides the
magnificent XCascade de Cor-
bayv,, the Grotte, odd, evoking
the pre-Colombus period of the
Indians.
Hunting enthusiasts will
find many places for shooting
game such as wild guinea,
wood-pigeons and even game
which is rare in Haiti nu-
merous Antillean wild boars
*and wild goats are to be found
in the neighboring mountain.
From the architectural point
of view, St. Marc is one of the
most interesting cities of the
country. If they have built se-
veral modern-style houses, the
town by its grandiose wooden
constructions have conserved
an element of ancientness
which will certainly please
those who are lamenting the

St. Marc prides itself as the
