Taking \off from San
Juan, Puerto Rico, in a
nine-passenger 85 mile an

landed at Bowen Field in
Port-au-Prince after a ptop
S*en route in the Dominican

4 ,I remember that trip
well, Rowe said. ((There

and has flown enough miles
laid end to end, to take him
around the world nearly
150 tines.
But he still hasn't .had
,enough not by a logbook
full.
Rowe will round out two
important milestones in Au
gust his 24th anniversary
with Pan American and 38
years of continuous flying
since he first climbed into
what then, passed for a cock
pit back in Prattsville, New
York, in 1914.
His logbook shows more
than 32,200 hours of fly-
sing. That represents approx
imately 4,830,000 miles
flown in 26,600 separate
flights..
Because of his 'previous.
flying experience, R o w e
was given No. 1 position
on Pan American's seniority
list when he joined the
fledging airline in August,
1928, nine months after
PAA started operations be-
tween Key West, Florida,
and Havana, Cuba.
In those days PAA had
three tiny Fokke- F-7's, 3
-pilots, about 75 other em-
ployes and a lone 90-mile
route. Today Rowe stands
at the top of .more than
1,400 names-on PAA's pilot
roster. The three-plane fleet
* has grown to almost 150,
the 75 employes to 19,000
and the 90 route miles to a
110,000-mi-le network that
circles the globeand serves
* 83 countries on every con-
tinent.
Since the day when Rowe
as a teen-aged aviation zea-
lot, first coaxed, a frail
Wright biplane into the air,
his flying career has carried
him to every ..part of the
world. His experiences *run
the gamut, from the hum-
drum to the' intensely thrill
ing,' from the comic to the
deadly serious business of
dodging enemy fire during
the war.
More important, through
out h's more than thiee and
a half decades of flying
Capt. Rowe has' maintained
a perfect safety record. That
is the achievement of which
he is proudest and quite
understandably.

He was piloted virtually
every type of flying boat,
amphibian and landplane
ihat Pan American ever
.operated. But he still likes
to hark back to the circus
'days of aviation and the
highly temperamental and
unpredictable u Jennies, of
pre-World War days. It
was in one of these frail,
chsolete craft that he had
h:s f'rst taste of cloud-hpp-
pine.
At the annual county fair
