match its quality.
Al Noustas, I creator of this in-
ternational service rendered to
the travelling American public
whose dollars are gratefull''
sought by people all over the
world, laughingly refers to his
service as the International-Anti-
*Schlepping Campaign. In this Jet
Age with its' definite weights re
strictions, this. service has bee1
hailed by thousands of appreci.a-
*live, overloaded travellers :who
can now roam the earth with.
completee freedom from having.
fo' carry, lug or, in other ,ordsz

them. Mr 'Npustai'' service 'eases
the burden for homeward-b6tind

to excess baggage charges; they -"
occasionally break. (Horrbrs!)
Just last week Barbancourt
shipped 1000 cases to Antwerp' as
a beginning 'on- the international,'.,;.
service list. Not so much? But
what a' start!
But last week came bad news'
too. There is a bill before -the
U.S.' legislature to stop all tour-
ist shipments to the, U.S. from
abroad. '
That, combi ned with, last*'
year's dollar spending restrict:
tions, is going to be felt by eve-.'
ry country that .woos : tourism.
'Much of that sort of cuttinbldown
Iderives- from excesses,, misde-.'
meanors and abuses of privile- '-
ges -.-and. that means od' the'-
part of both the traveller' and
the tourist shopping centers *in
every coritry. It.- also known
as, biting the hand that' feeds
you. Let's hope the new bill','.'
doesn't -get by it could be' a
killer, especially to Haiti's tou- -,

The television lessons. in En.
glish were developed by the Uni-
ted States Information Agency.
in consultation with leading, ex-
perts in the field of language
teaching. The course is based on
-the most widely-used textbook
'for teaching American 'English
in other countries of the world.
This is LET'S LEARN ENGLISH,
published by the American Book
Company in New York. It can be
purchased at La Caravelle Book-
store. Though .the teythook- is not
necessary, it would be a valua-
ble aid to the television student.'-
To teachers of English, as well
as. to viewers, the course will
be %unusually interesting because.
it breaks new ground in the tech-
nique of language instruction.
Heretofore, in television and in
filrps, the -camera merely has
4avesdroppedi on" a classroom'
Where students', were learning
-from a teacher with a black-
board. In Let's Learn English,
the camera leaves the classroom
after .the"first' few' lessons.' and
takes bottih. students and' televli-

.The *,.course is builtt around
three 'foreign. sttidents who ale.
fearing English, .and. the pretty
American girl .student they, meet
at Columbia University in New
York: The students are Tomas
Silva, a Latin American; Ayse

'4

Habal, a girl student from the
Middle East; and LAuis Nakata,
an African, Their American fri-
end is Betty Allen, 21-year-old
daughter of a factory technician.
Mrs Logan opens each progr-
am with a short introduction, ex-
plaining the day's lesson. Then
the scene changes swiftly: One,
day we are on a 'sidewalk in
Greenwich Village, New York,
where Tomas Silva encounters a
painter of modernistic pictures.
Or the scene may be the visit-
ors' gallery of the United Na-
tions... or a news ,stand on a
stret-corner in New York... or a
dormitory room at the University
where Betty and Ayse are plan-
ning a party for several other
students.
Each situation teaches English
and, at the same timije, gives the
television .audience an interest-
ing dramatic sketch involving
some aspect of life in the United
States of America. The English
lesson -which is entirely in the
English 'language- lasts .for a
quarter-hour, after which Mrs '
Logan returns to explain or dis-
cuss points of grammar or'l ic-
tion, and to give the next day's
lesson.
' The Television course starts
from zero;' that is, a presump-
tion that the TV student knows'
no English at al-. Each day's
lesson grows progigrssively more
difficult; but each -is planned in
accordance witf.'1bSTid "pedago-
gical principles that have been.
tested, and 'proved'.irr the teach-
Ing of.English. as a second lan-
guage. Interspersed in' the cour-
se are review lessons which per-
mit the .TV student to catch up
of for any reason he has had to
miss a few lessons. At thie' :end.
of 130 lessons, the"*.rrdlevision
student should be .able to com-
municate in English, and. to .un-
derstand basic speech *or writ-
ings in the language.
