MINK


PELT PRODUCTION DOWN: Mink pelt production in the United States in 1976 totaled
3.0 million pelts, down 1 percent from 1975. However,
Wisconsin, the major mink State, produced 926,000 pelts, up 1 percent from a
year ago. By color class, the number of pelts as a percent of the total 1976
production was: Standard, 32.9 percent; pastel, 21.9 percent; pearl, 8.9 percent;
demi-buff, 17.6 percent; violet, 7.9 percent and the remaining color classes
accounted for 10.8 percent.

VALUE OF PELT PRODUCTION UP: Mink pelts sold during the 1976 crop year were
valued at 87.9 million dollars. This compared with
a value of 73.9 million dollars for pelts sold during the 1975 crop year. The
average price per pelt for the 1976 crop year was $29.10 compared with $24.10 the
previous year.

INCREASE IN BRED FEMALES: Mink females bred to produce kits in 1977 totaled 886,000, up 6 percent from
the 837,000 the previous year. Bred females and percent changes from a year
ago for the two major color classes are: Standard, 408,000 females bred, up 9 percent; pastel, 233,000,
up 11 percent. Females bred in the leading mink States and percent changes from 1976 are: Wisconsin,
256,000, up 8 percent; Utah, 113,000, up 16 percent and Minnesota unchanged at 104,000.

Percent of total females bred to produce kits in 1977 by color are: Standard, 46.0 percent; pastel,
26.3 percent; pearl 8.8 percent; violet, 8.1 percent; the remaining color classes accounted for 10.8 per-
cent.

RANCH NUMBERS DECLINE: There were 1,015 mink ranches producing pelts in 1976, off 6 percent from a
year ago. Wisconsin with 260 ranches was down 2 percent, Utah with 168 was down
10 percent and Minnesota with 123 was down 16 percent.
