United States import statistics are compiled from information verified by Customs Examiners on import entries filed with Customs by importers. Under the direction of Philip Nichols, Jr.,. Commissioner of Customs, and Lester D. Johnson, Assistant Commissioner of Customs, the primary responsibility for the verification of import statistical information is assigned to the field and headquarters staff of the Division of Appraisement Administration.
