.Ariculture, Production and marketing Administration, from railroads, express and boat cor'panics,
i'olesale fruit and vegetable dealers, chain organizations and other sources in Washington, D. C.

Total unloads by rail, boat and truck in Washington of fresh fruits and vegetables during the
calendar year 1946 amounted to 15,109 cars. Of t"is total 60 percent originated by freight, 3C
percent by truck and the balance 7as by express, except for a few by boat.
RTho total unloads by all carriers for 19'16 was 1 percent larger than .or 1945 and was a 15 .)crcc'.t
increase over t.-.e 5-yec.r (1-41-15) average.
Carlot unloads totaled 9,129 cars, a decline of 69 cars below 1C-15 and 446 cars below the peal:
year 1944. During the late 1930's carlot unloads apniro:d ated 5,500-6,C00 cars. Com eoncing
with 1341 they increased each year until the peak of 0,575 cars was reached in 1944.
Potatoes led the carlot unloads A7ith 1,608 cars, followed by oranges with 1,184, lettuce 1,C00,
bananas 63G, grapefruit 423, onions 400, cantalouns 370, celery 356, sweetpotatoes 290, carrots
269 and apples 232. Thirty-eight other commodities ccrprised the balance.
California and Florida originated over half of the carlot unloads. California furnishing 2,589
carlots and Florida 2,b96. Other important originating Statcs included aine with 377 cars,
Arizona 471, Te.as 453, '"ew York 361, Id&aho 280, South Caroline. 26E, Washington State 246, and
Louisiana 207. T'-:enty-nine other Statcs end several forei;rn countries accounted for the balance.
Carlot unloads were heaviest in April '-ith '82 cars and were ligh-test in August with 561 cars.
Unloads by truck totaled 5,696 cars, er. increase of 7 percent over the 1945 figures. Truck
unloads increased during th.e late 193C's reaching a peal: in 1iD42 with 6,270 carlot equivalents.
During 19-13 and 1944 war-time tire and gasoline restrictions caused a mar-ed drop in-trucd
unloads, but after t'Vese restrictions r:e--e eased in 12-15 the trend. has been u..aMrd.
The most important conrsdities unloaded by truck: in ordor of importance, were potatoes with
697 carlot equivalents, followed by cabbage '-it' 536, apples 459, torac-oes 449, beans 539,
peaches 3-10, green corn 298, greens (e::cjpt spinach) 276, spinach 215 and swreetpotatoes 156.
Forty-seven other commodities comprised the balance.
Principal States originating the truck unloads vreo Virgi:-ia with 647 cars, North Carolina 641,
New Jersey 639, :aryland 0C15, Pennsylvania 575, Florida 572, Nove York 414, South Carolina 168,
West Virginia 138 and Georgia 110 carlot equivalents. Approximately 1,000 carlot equivalents
were reshipped by truck froe lie:. York City -n&. Balti:2ore to Washington.
Unloads by L.C.L. e::press totaled 234 carlot equivalents as ccrnp-ar-d with 257 cars for 1045.
Tomatoes, aishrooms, squash, peaches, cantalouns Pnd beans were the principal ccurnodities
received in the order of their importance. Principal originating states were Florida,
:assachusetts, i'orth Carolina, South Carolina, Perinsylvania and Louisiana.
