Abstract: Faculty Enhancement Opportunity (FEO) grant proposal for successfully awarded grant. Abstract from the proposal: My proposal seeks FEO funds to bring experts to UF to assist me with the development of a plan to increase the digitization of currently inaccessible federal documents that are housed in the collections of 41 Federal Depository Libraries in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. As the Chair of the Government Documents Department of the George A. Smathers Libraries, I serve as the Regional Federal Depository Librarian. In this role I curate UF’s collection of close to a million federal documents and have oversight responsibility for the federal documents collections of the 41 previously mentioned Federal Depository Libraries (both academic and public). I conducted a survey of these 41 libraries this past spring. The results indicated a strong interest in digitizing federal documents that are important to their local users. This interest was coupled with concerns about their ability to do this because of limited skills and/or resources. In order to address these concerns I worked with the librarians in the 41 Depository Libraries to develop a five year action plan that calls for the development of a cost-efficient and attainable process for the selection and digitization of documents, a process that would also include a training component for the scanning, processing and the promotion of digital collections. FEO funds will be used to develop this process in conjunction with three nationally recognized experts who will be brought to UF to collaborate. I have selected experts to address three specific areas: 1) the development of a successful digitization plan (Mark Phillips, University of North Texas and Brooke Wooldridge, Florida International University); 2) the development of web-based training materials (Brooke Wooldridge); and 3) the development of skill sets for the creation and hosting of webinars for the 41 Depository Libraries (Kirsten Clark, University of Minnesota).
