Abstract:
P.S. is a concerto for clarinet and orchestra based on ideas of fusing the visceral and sensual with the abstract and calculated. The program notes for P.S. read, “P.S. is not a postscript. It is a snapshot, an impression, a glimpse. Ponder/Sense.” The concerto has a formal structure alternating between controlled musical material based on a specific theme and a more modal “sound world” based on chord structure and simplistic rhythms. This is the dichotomy presented of “Ponder” versus “Sense.” There is a six note main theme presented by the solo clarinet after a brief introduction which provides the basic material for the entire piece. Even through the more modal sections, this theme reappears to fit the sound world. The difference in its treatment between the sections has to do with how strictly its intervallic structure is retained. In the “Ponder” sections, the theme is presented and transformed mathematically and without alterations concerned with resolution of pitches. In the “Sense” sections, the theme is more flexible, its transformations allowing for more definitive resolutions and more ubiquitous consonance. The finale of the piece attempts to merge the two groups of material, reaching a dramatic climax followed by a solo cadenza and quiet coda.
