IDEA OF THE INCREASED PRODUCTION OF
EVAPORATED MILK DURING RECENT YEARS IS
GAINED BY COMPARING THE AVERAGE APRIL
PACK DURING THE LAST Fi\E YEARS WITH THAT
OF THE AVERAGE PACK TEN YEARS AGO. THE
INCREASE IS OVER 50 PERCENT. THE CURRENT.
YEARS ADRIL PRODUCTION WAS 21 PERCENT
GREATER THAN IN 1Q34, AND THERE WAS AN
INCREASE DURING JANUARY TO APRIL,
INCLUSIVE OF 88,500,000 POUNDS, OR 18.6
PERCENT, OVER THE CORRESPONDING PERIOD OF
LAST YEAR.

CONDENSED MILK (CASE GOODS) PRO-
DJCTION IN APRIL OF APPROXIMATELY 62
MILLION POUNDS WAS 6.4 PERCENT GREATER
THAN A YEAR EARLIER, BUT IN CONTRAST TO
THE EVAPORATED MILK INCREASE DURING THE
PAST TEN YEARS IS A DECREASE OF AROUND
90 PERCENT IN THE AVERAGE APRIL PRO-
D'JGTION OF CONDENSED. TEN YEARS AGO THE
AVERAGE FOR APRIL APPROXIMATED 20 MILLION
PO')NDS, AND 15 YE'.RS AGO IT WAS DOUBLE
THAT AMOUNT.

STOCKS OF EVAPORATED MILK IN MANU-
FACTURERS1 HANDS ARE STILL RELATIVELY LOW,
AMOUNTING ON MAY I TO 74,000,000 POUNDS.
ON MAY I 1934 STOCKS WERE REPORTED AS
116,000,600 PuJ1DS. THIS REPRESENTS A
REDUCTION JIIDER A (FAR AGO OF 42 MILLION

MAY 1935

POUNDS, OR 37 PERCENT. ON APRIL I THE
PREVIOUS YEAR COMPARISON SHOWED A
REDUCTION OF 59 MILLION POUNDS, OR 60
PERCENT. THUS, THE SHORTAGE HAS BEEN
CUT DOWN, DESPITE WHAT APPEARS TO HAVE
BEEN A FAIRLY GO`D SIZED INCREASE IN
TRADE OUTPUT. INCREAS-.0 PRODUCTION
ACCOUNTS FOR THIS. STOCKS OF CONDENSED
CASE ON MAY I WERE APPROXIMATELY 5j
MILLION POUNDS, A DECREASE OF 6 PERCENT
UNDER LAST YEAR.

THE QUARTERLY SURVEY OF STOCKS OF
CONDENSED AND EVAPORATED MILK HELD BY
WHOLESALE GROCERS SHOWS THAT THE SITU-
ATION AT THE CLOSE OF THE QUARTER WHICH
ENDED MARCH 31 BCRE ABOUT THE USUAL
RELATIONSHIP TO THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.

PRICES PAID FOR MILK Y CONDEN-
SERIES DURING APRIL AV RAGE $1.46 PER
CWT. (3.5 PERCENT MILK), A SLIGHT
INCREASE ONLY OVER MARCH, UT 44 CENTS
HIGHER THAN IN APRIL 1934. THE LATTER
CHANGE REFLECTS THE DIFFERENCE IN BUTTER
PRICES THIS YEAR AND LAST. WHOLESALE
SELLING PRICES CF ROTH CONDENSED AND
EVAPORATED MILK WERE ABOUT THE SAME IN
APRIL.AS IN MARCH, AND EXCEPTION CONDEN-
SED CASE WERE ASOUT IQ PERCENT HIGHER
THAN IN APRIL I134. ONDENSED CASE
PRICES IN APRIL AVERAGED SLIGHTLY LESS
THAN LAST YEAR.
