EVAPORATED VILK PRODUCTION SHARPLY LOWER THAN IN 1933

A SUMMARY OF REPORTS RECEIVED BY
THE U.S. BUREAU OF AGRICCJLTURAL ECONOMICS
FROM TERMINAL MARKETS AND FROM MANU--
FACTURERS REVEALS SOME CHANGES IN THE
CONDENSED AND EVArOr;ATED i;.'ILK MARiKFT
SITUATION FROM THAT OF A MOD')TH AGO.
THERE A.E ALWAYS NORMAL S;FAONAL
INFLUENCES OPERATING AT THIS TIME OF YEAR,
BUT THE CURRENT SITUATION RE,-LECTS ALSO
THE WIDE-SFREAD DROUGHT WHICH HAS ';;E-
VAILED PARTICULARLY IN PARTS OF THE

PRINCIPAL MID-WESTERN DAIRY SECTIONS, AND
THIS CONDITION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN INTO
ACCOUNT IN ANY ANALYSIS OF PRESENT
MARKETS.
PRODUCTION OF EVAPORATED CASE
GOOOS HAS BEEN CONSIDERABLY LIGHTER
THr-OU!GHOUT ALL OF THIS YEAR THAN IN
CORRERPONDING PERIODS OF 1933, AND SHOWED
EVEN A SHARPER REDUCTION IN APRIL THAN
OCCURRED IN MARCH. THE CHANGE IN MARCH,

* THESE FIGURES INCLUDE MILK PUCHAGED PRIMARILY FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF EVAPORATED
AND CONDENSED MILK.
(CONTINUED FROM FIRST PAGE)

AS COMPARED WITH MARCH, 1933, WAS A DROP
OF 19 MILLION POUNDS, OR ALMOST 13 PER
CENT. IN APRIL THE REDUCTION WAS 25
MILLION POUNDS, OR 15 PER CENT. THE
DECREASE DURING THE FIRST FOUR MONTHS OF
THE YEAR WAS OVER 70 MILLION POUNDS.
CONDENSED MILK PRODUCTION, ON THE OTHER
HAND, CONTINUES TO EXCEED THAT OF A YEAR
AGO, AND WAS 32.0 PER CENT GREATER IN
APRIL THAN IN 1933. WHILE THE PRODUCTION
OF THIS PARTICULAR CLASS'OF GOODS WAS
LESS IN APRIL THAN IN MARCH, IT IS NOT
UNUSUAL FOR THIS PRODUCT.

STOCKS OF EVAPORATED MILK IN MANU-
FACTURERS' HANDS ON MAY I AMOUNTED TO
115,847,000 POUNDS. THIS IS A 200 PER
CENT INCREASE OVER THE STOCKS OF MAY I
1933, BUT IT IS TO BE REMEMBERED THAT
LAST YEAR'O STOCKS WERE THE LOWEST ON
RECORD FOR THAT DATE. CURRENT STOCKS OF
EVAPORATED CASE COMPARE FAVORABLY WITH
THE FIVE-YEAR AVERAGE. STOCKS OF CON-
DENSED CASE ON MAY I OF 5,924,000 POUNDS
WERE SLIGHTLY HEAVIER THAN A YEAR
EARLIER, BUT WERE, HOWEVER, ONLY ABOUT
HALF THE ,V\EFRAGE STOCKS FOR THAT DATE.
IN VIEW OF THE DISCOURAGING PRODUCTION
SITUATION AS IT APPLIES TO DAIRY PRODUCTS
GENERALLY, AS WELL AS AN ACTIVE TRADE
MOVEMENT OF BOTH CONDENSED AND EVAPORATED
MILK, CURRENT STOCKS DO NOT APPEAR
EXCESSIVE. TRADE OUTPUT OF THESE
PRPODIJCTS FOR THE PERIOD, JANUARY TO

MARCH, INCLUSIVE, WAS 5.4 PER CENT AND 3.3
oER CENT, RESPECTIVELY, HEAVIER THAN
DURING THE CORRESPONDING PERIOD OF 1933.
THE LAST SURVEY OF WHOLESALE GROCERS'
STOCKS, COVERING MARCH 31, SHOWED A
REDUCTION OF ABOUT 20 PER CENT BELOW
MARCH 31, 1933. THIS WAS APPROXIMATELY
THE RELATIONSHIP WHICH EXISTED AT THE
TIME OF THE PRECEDING SURVEY, DECEMBER 31.
ON BOTH OF THESE DATES, THE CURRENT STOCKS
OF WHOLESALE GROCERS WERE ABOUT EQUIVALENT
TO AVERAGE HOLWINGSs

THE PRICE SITUATION SHOWS VERY
LITTLE CHANGE THIS MONTH. SOME SALES OF
EVAPORATED CASE AT PRICES BELOW THE
MARKETING AGREEMENT SCHEDULE ARE REPORTED,
BUT FOR THE MOST PART THE SCHEDULE IS
BEING FOLLOWED. PRICES OF LESSER KNOWN
BRANDS ARE THE MOST IRREGULAR. RETAIL
SALES OF ALL BRANDS HAVE SEEN PUSHED, WITH
BETTER KNOWN BRANDS OFFERED AT 3 CANS
FOR 190. LESSER KNOWN BRANDS ARE REPORTED
OFFERED AT VARIOUS RETAIL PRICES, 6E PER
CAN, 4 CANS FOR 23', AND 3 CANS FOR 170.
THE PROPOSED ACTION LOOKING TOWARD THE
LICENSING OF EVAPORATED MILK MANUFACTURERS
IS STILL PENDING. ONE OF THE SUGGESTED
PROVISIONS OF THE PROPOSED LICENSE HAS
TO DO WITH THE PRICE DIFFERENTIALS
BETWEEN MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM WHOLESALE
SELLING PRICES, BUT NOTHING DEFINITE
HAS BEEN APPROVED AS YET.
