HESE FIGURES INCLUDE MILK PURCHASED PRIMARILY FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF EVAPORATED
AND CONDENSED MILK.
(CONTINUED FROM FIRST PAGE)

$2.70, AND FOR THE REST OF THE COUNTRY 10
CENTS PER CASE LOWER. THESE PRICES, HOW-
EVER, WERE NOT OFFICIALLY IN EFFECT PRIOR
TO SEPTEMBER 10, WHICH MAY EXPLAIN IN
PART WHY THE SEPTEMBER AVERAGE WAS THE
SAME AS THE MINIMUM OF THE RANGE.

UNDER THE NEW SYSTEM, MINIMUM
PRICES TO PRODUCERS ARE TO BE BASED UPON
FORMULAS WHICH BEAR A DEFINITE-RELATION
TO CURRENT BUTTER AND CHEESE MARKET
QUOTATIONS, AND I FORMATION REGARDING
PRICES FOR OCTOBER IS, THEREFORE,
INCOMPLETE. WHOLESALE BUTTER PRICES SO
-AR THIS MONTH HAVE AVERAGED ONLY A
REACTION OF A CENT HIGHER THAN LAST MONTH,
VITH CHEESE PRICES GENERALLY UNCHANGED,
0O THAT PRICES TO PRODUCERS FOR MILK
DELIVERED TO CONDENSERIES THIS MONTH WILL
PROBABLY BE APPROXIMATELY THE SAME AS THE
SEPTEMBER AVERAGE OF 1.09 PER CWT.

PRODUCTION OF EVAPORATED MILK IN
SEPTEMBER WAS 11.5 PER CENT HEAVIER THAN
IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR, ALTHOUGH THERE
NAS A DECLINE UNDER AUGUST OF 16 PER CENT.
REGARDLESS OF THIS SEASONAL DECLINE IN
PRODUCTION, WHICH WAS ABOUT THE USUAL
RATE OF REDUCTION, TRADE OUTPUT DURING

SEPTEMBER WAS INSUFFICIENT TO AVOID A
BACKING UP OF STOCKS IN MANUFACTURERS'
HANDS, AND THESE STOCKS OF OCTOBER I OF
208 MILLION POUNDS REPRESENTED AN
INCREASE OF 31 MILLION POUNDS, OR 17 PER
CENT, ABOVE THE SEPTEMBER I STOCKS. IN
TERMS OF AVERAGES, THE USUAL CHANGE IN
STOCKS DURING SEPTEMBER IS A 10 PER CENT
REDUCTION. THE EXTENT TO WHICH EVAPO-
RATED MILK MANUFACTURERS ARE ABLE TO
STIMULATE SALES AND THUS AVOID A PILING
UP OF BURDENSOME SURPLUS, WILL HAVE A
BEARING ON FUTURE PRICE POLICIES. RETAIL
SALES HAVE BEEN PUSHED THIS MONTH IN SOME
CITIES, WITH SALES REPORTED AS LOW AS 5
CENTS PER CAN; IN CASE STOCKS DO NOT
CLEAR READILY, THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE
WOULD BE A FURTHER REDUCTION OF PRODUCTION.
ALREADY SOME MILK IS REPORTED AS BEING
DIVERTED FROM EVAPORATED MILK TO BUTTER.

CONDENSED MILK MARKETS ;AE WITHOUT
ANY UNUSUAL FEATURES COMPARED TO LAST
MONTH. PRICES TO THE TRADE IN SEPTEMBER
WERE UNCH,\NGED FROM AUGUST, PRODUCTION
SHOWED A DECREASE OF 19 PER CENT UNDER
AUGUST AND 26 PER CENT UNDER SEPTEMBER,
1932, AND STOCKS ON OCTOBER WE;:E WELL
UNDER THE PREVIOUS MONTH AND THE PREVIOUS
YEAR,
