Abstract: The work of the Atis Rezistans, a Port-au-Prince-based artists collective, is inspired by both their spiritual beliefs—the iconography of Vodou is a prominent but not omnipresent motif in the art—and their urban environment: the immediate setting of Grand Rue, as well as the rest of Haiti’s megalopolis, Port-au-Prince. Led by an established Haitian artist, Andre Eugene, the Atis Rezistans use found materials to create powerful representations of their lived experience: religious faith, natural disaster, sexuality, hope for the future. 1: Wood sculpture with crucifix. Nails are hammered into the base of the penis. Plastic drum is used as the base of the piece.
