CARLOT SHIPMENTS OP RESSH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
BY COMMODITIES, STATES, AND MONTHS

Including boat shipments reduced to carlot equivalents
CALAEDAR YEAR 1948

WASHINGTON 25, D C.

MAY 1349

,Y

I

The carlot shipments summarized herein were furnished the Fruit and Vegetable
Market ~tbService by railroads boat lines and the IRilwa Express Agency, and
this cooperation is gratefully acknowledged.
Heavier loadings of most fresh fruits and vegetables under 0. D T, Order *8 and
supplementary directives were continued during 1948. A Table showing a comparison
of the usual" pre-wr load with the 1948 "usual" load of the principal fruits and
vegetables moving in volume by rail is included in this sumary. these "usual
loads represent the consensus of opinion in the major markets and the heavier
shipping areas for the commodities in question but may not represent an actual
average of all cars loaded.
Footnotes indicating USD Goverment Purchases are shown in connection with
commodity tables herein when segregation of such purchases were reported to the
Market News Seivice by the carriers. Cars shown in these foo notes do not alws
represent complete Govenment purchases of the commodity in question. his is
due to the fact the railroads cannot always readily identify these purchases
as such.
Truck shipments are included insofar as these data were obtainable, he same
factors which have been in use for several years for converting truck shipments to
carlot equivalents were used, and this should be considered when comparing tra
data with rail. Exceptions CLtfrs See footnotes at bottom of ci trust tables.
