4964 Fgrest'Fire Statistics

Only you can prevent forest fires

A compilation of forest fire statistics covering Calendar Year 1964 as reported
to the United States Forest Service by its field offices, cooperating States, the
Department of the Interior, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The statistics are obtained for forest land and nonforest watershed lands in Federal
ownership; and on lands in state and private ownership which are included in the
cooperative forest fire control program authorized by Section 2 of the Clarke-McNary
Act of 1924.

The figures are shown separately by the individual states reporting and totals are
also given for certain geographical groups of States. The tabulation is prepared
in the following sections:

SUMMARY OF FOREST FIRE STATISTICS FOR 1964

C Areas Needing Protection; Areas Protected
4 and Unprotected; Number of Fires and Area
Burned on both protected and unprotected
afoest lands. (Pages 1 to 4)

OF FOREST FIRES BY CAUSE, SIZE, AND
/ RESPONSIBILITY CLASSES

SOn protected areas only. (Pages 5 to 12) I

AREA TURNED BY CAUSE. SIZE. AND TYPE CLASSES

n protected areas only. (Pages 13 to 24)

SUMMARY OF 1964 FIRE WEATHER BY REGIONS
WITHIN GROUPS OF STATES

(Pages 25 and 26)

GRAPHS AND CHARTS (Pages 27 to 29)

The statistics given herein are the most reliable data which the Federal and State
protection agencies were able to obtain.

Since no field organizations are available in unprotected areas to report fires,
the statistics shown for such unprotected areas are merely the best estimates made
by the States. No data was obtained for state and private lands in Arizona. The
number of fires and area burned on the Department of Interior's 298,107M acres non-
forest watershed lands, included in Federal area totals for the first time, are not
shown.

SUMMARY OF 1964 FIRE WEATHER

ROCKY MOUNTAIN GROUP:

Idaho and Montana (Northern Region):

Below normal temperatures beginning in February combined with above average
precipitation from June through September to make a better than average fire
season. Although lightning was prevalent with most showers, the generally
moist conditions greatly minimized its fire starting potential.

Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming (Rocky Mountain Region):

The 1964 fire season was a continuation of critical conditions which prevailed
in 1963. Contributing to these conditions were: periods of high temperatures;
low humidities; and excessive flash fuels. In the late fall, extreme fire-
danger ratings resulted from high wind velocities in Colorado, Wyoming, and
South Dakota.

Three comparatively short drought periods were experienced. However, general
rainfall early in June broke the spring drought and the mid-summer dry period
was ended by rains in July and August. The fall season was quite dry with a
corresponding increase in fire occurrence.

Nevada and Utah (Intermountain Region):

The 1964 season was unusual with above normal rainfall in June but an extended
dry fall season. In late June Nevada had high to extreme burning conditions
which continued through the summer into late October. Extremely severe light-
ning activity in mid-August played a large part in making 1964 one of the
worst fire seasons in the history of Nevada. Utah had a near normal season.

PACIFIC GROUP:

California and Hawaii (California Region):

Precipitation was below average during the winter period in the north third of
California. However, spring storms kept conditions at near normal for most of
the season. In the State's central section fire severity reached normal by
mid-July and then climbed steadily above normal reaching an extreme peak in
late September. The fire season in California's southern area extended from
January 1 until ended by rains in mid-November. Only May and November failed
to produce extreme fire weather conditions here. Fire load indicies up to 200
percent above normal were prevalent in late September. High north and east
winds in the low lands, plus high temperatures and low humidities, all combined
to create a "bad" fire situation. Hawaii experienced favorable conditions on
all islands but one as a result of above average rainfall from January to June.
The island of Hawaii, where an unusually dry period prevailed for two months,
was the one exception.

PACIFIC GROUP: (continued)

Alaska (Alaska Region):

Alaska had much less acreage burned than usual as the result of moderately heavy
and continued rains.

Oregon and Washington (Pacific Northwest Region):

For the third consecutive year both States had a relatively easy fire season.
In some areas 1964 was the mildest season in the past nine years. Several large
fires did occur in October, the season's worst month, as the result of combined
east wind conditions and low humidities.

NORTH CENTRAL GROUP:

Illinois. Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri. North Dakota, Ohio. and
Wisconsin (North Central Region);

For most of the Region the 1964 season was a continuation of the dry cycle of
proceeding years. Only North Dakota and Minnesota had near normal conditions.
Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio experienced severe dry weather and numerous forest
fires.

SOUTHERN GROUP:

Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina,
Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas (Southern Region):

Weather conditions in 1964 were a welcome relief after the severe burning con-
ditions of 1963. In many areas precipitation was above normal and well distri-
buted. Local drought conditions occurred in northeast Texas in the first three
months of the year, in south Florida in late summer, and in northern Tennessee
for a few weeks in the fall. Some effects of the 1963 drought carried over
into the 1964 season in Arkansas and Oklahoma. A considerable fire-hazard which
will affect central Georgia for the next three to four years was created by one
of the most severe sleet storms ever to occur in this area.

EASTERN GROUP:

Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maine. Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire,
New Jersey. New York. Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West
Virginia (Eastern Region):

C.Y. 1964 was the third successive drought year for the eastern States. Although
March and April were considered favorable, drought conditions began in May and
continued into late November. Fires occurred in all of these States in each
month from April to December. Drought conditions were particularly severe in the
mid-Atlantic States in late spring and summer. Lightning fires were a major pro-
blem during the summer months for the northern States in the Region. In both
summer and fall most fires burned into the ground making control increasingly
difficult and prolonged.
