FOREST FIRE STATISTICS


This is a compilation of forest fire statistics covering the Calendar
Year 1958 as reported to the United States Forest Service by its field
offices, cooperating States, the Department of the Interior, and the
Tennessee Valley Authority.

The figures are shown separately by the individual States reporting and
totals are also given for certain geographical groups of States. The
tabulation is prepared in the following sections:

Federal protection agencies were able to obtain.

Since no field organizations are available in unprotected areas to re-
port fires, the statistics on such unprotected areas are merely the best
estimates by the States. No estimates were obtained for State and pri-
vate lands in Arizona, Nebraska, Kansas, and Wyoming.

SUMMARY OF 1958 FIRE WEATHER

Region 1 Idaho and Montana

Overall fire danger about normal. North Idaho experienced worst fire
season in last 10 years.

Region 2 Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming

The normal spring and early summer fire season gave way to a fall
period of high hazard conditions.

Region 3 Arizona and New Mexico

Fire season about average.

Region 4 Nevada and Utah

The 1958 fire season was the most severe on record.

Region 5 California

Fire season was favorable until July, then came the driest fall, state-
wide, in the last 108 years.

Region 6 Oregon and Washington

The 1958 fire season was the most critical since 1951.

Region 7 Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia

Favorable fire season throughout the region.

Region 8 Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi,
North Carolina, Oklahoma. South Carolina, Tennessee, and
Texas

Fire season favorable with normal or better precipitation throughout the
region, except in parts of Tennessee and Alabama.

Region 9 Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North
Dakota, Ohio, and Wisconsin

The Lake States had a high hazard fire season. The Central States' season
was about normal.
