This is a compilation of forest fire statistics covering the Calendar
Year 1955 as reported to the United States Forest Service by its field
offices, cooperating States, the Department of the Interior, and the
Tennessee Valley Authority.

The figures are shown separately by the individual States reporting
and totals are also given for certain geographical groups of States.
The tabulation is prepared in the following sections:

Federal protection agencies were able to obtain.

Since no field organizations are available in unprotected areas to
report fires, the statistics on such unprotected areas are merely the
best estimates by the States. No estimates were obtained for State
and private lands in Arizona, Nebraska, Kansas, and Wyoming.

SUMMARY OF 1955 FIRE WEATHER


Region 1 Idaho and Montana

Season average to below average.

Region 2 Colorado, Nebraska. South Dakota, and Wyoming

Fire season longer and more severe in both Colorado and Wyoming; near
normal in Nebraska and South Dakota.

Region 3 Arizona and New Mexico

Hazardous spring, wet summer and dry fall.

Region 4 Nevada and Utah

Drought conditions existed in Nevada, but conditions were favorable
in Utah.

Region 5 California

Sustained periods of extreme fire danger. One of worst periods ever ex-
perienced in the State.

Region 6 Oregon and Washington

Fire weather conditions slightly more severe than in 1954, but remained
below normal.

Region 7 Connecticut. Delaware. Kentucky, Maine. Maryland, Massachusetts,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island.
Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia

Season throughout the Region was relatively normal with some seasonal
hazards.

Region 8 Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi
North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and
Texas

Except for Mississippi and Texas the balance of the Region experienced
drought conditions which caused extreme fire conditions.

Region 9 Illinois. Indiana. Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North
Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin

Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota had rather hazardous conditions; the balance
of the Region showed moderate to low fire conditions.
