SUMMARY OF 195I WEATHB AND FIRE SITUATIONS


Region 1 Copurising Montana and Idaho

Season rather light with lightning activity below normal.

Region 2 Comprising Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska. South Dakota and Wyoming

Drought conditions existed in Colorado, but South Dakota had a relatively
light season.

Region 3 Comprising Arizona and New Mexico

Season was one of the most hazardous on record.

Region 4 Comprising Utah. Nevada, Idaho and Western Wyoming

June, July and August were very dry, but during the critical period there
were few lightning storms.

Region 5 Comprising California and Hawaii

Season dry and warm early in the year, but changed to rainy and cool later
in the season. There were fewer lightning fires than in 1953.

Region 6 Comprising Oregon and Washington

Slightly more severe season than 1953, but both years were lighter than
normal.

Region 7 Comprising Connecticut, Delaware. Kentucky. Maine. Maryland.
Massachusetts. New Hampshire. New Jersey. New York. Pensylvania,
Rhode Island. Vermont. Virginia and West Virginia

Season throughout the greater part of the Region was favorable for low fire
occurrence. The weather record was unusual in the occurrence of three
hurricane s.

Region 8 Comprising Alabama. Arkansas. Florida, Georgia. Louisiana,
Mississippi. North Carolina, Oklahoma. South Carolina,
Tennessee and Texas

Continued drought conditions resulted in an almost yearlong fire season.
Many counties throughout the Region were certified for drought relief.

Region 9 Coprisin TIllinois, Indiana. Iowa cO, Michi Minesota.
Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin

Though this was the third successive year of high temperatures, below normal
precipitation, and drying winds, the fire record for the Region was better
than average.
