TURKEYS

Farm Production, Disposition, and Gross Income
1962-63

Production of turkeys totaled 1,673 million pounds live weight in 1963,
according to the Crop Reporting Board. This was 3 percent more than the
1962 production of 1,630 million pounds.

Gross Income: The gross income from turkeys in 1963 was $373 million,
the highest of record and 6 percent above the 1962 gross income of $352
million. The average price received in 1963 for turkeys sold was 22.3 cents
per pound, compared to 21.6 cents per pound the previous year.

The gross income in 1963 was greater than in 1962 in all regions except
two. Increases were 19 percent in the South Atlantic, 13 percent in the
South Central, 12 percent in the West North Central, and 5 percent in the
East North Central. The North Atlantic and the West both had decreases of
5 percent.

Number Raised: The number of turkeys raised in 1963 was 93.4 million
birds, 1 percent above the 1962 crop and second to the record crop of
108.1 million in 1961.

Turkey growers raised 83.7 million heavy breed turkeys in 1963 com-
pared with 83.3 million in 1962. The 1963 heavy breed turkey crop in-
cluded 32.2 million heavy white and 51.5 million other heavy. This compares
with the 1962 crop of 31.2 million heavy white and 52.1 million other heavy.
The number of light breed turkeys raised in 1963 was 9.7 million, 7 per-
cent above the 9.0 million raised in 1962.

Increases in the number of turkeys raised in 1963 compared with 1962
were 18 percent in the South Atlantic, 14 percent in the South Central and
3 percent in the West North Central. These increases were partially offset
by decreases of 10 percent in the West, and 3 percent in the North Atlantic.

The death loss of poults in 1963 was 8.2 percent of those bought and
home hatched compared with 8.9 percent in 1962. Loss of breeding stock
during 1963 as a percent of breeders on hand January 1, 1963 was 5.2 per-
cent, compared with 5.9 percent a year earlier.

Turkeys Sold: There were 93.3 million head of turkeys sold in 1963, 1
percent more than the 92.1 million head sold in 1962. Growers indicate that
they sold as fryer-roaster 76 percent of the light breed turkeys raised, 27
percent of the heavy whites and 1 percent of the other heavies. The number
of pounds live weight of turkeys sold in 1963 was 1,676 million pounds com-
pared with 1,630 million pounds in 1963.

January 1 Breeder Hens: Heavy breeder hens on hand January 1, 1964
totaled 3,386,000, 3 percent less than a year earlier. Light breed hens
totaled 395,000, up 4 percent from January 1, 1963. The number of other
turkeys (market birds and breeder toms) on hand January 1, 1964 was
2,534,000 birds, 3 percent less than a year earlier.
