FVUS-6 (1977)

CALENDAR YEAR 1977

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
AGRICULTURAL MARKETING SERVICE
Fruit and Vegetable Division
Market News Branch
WASHINGTON, D.C. 20250

October 1978

NOTICE

Due to the heavy decline of rail shipments of fresh fruits and vegetables,
consolidation of waybilling stations into central waybilling points and the
establishment of mobile agents on a number of railroads, the significance of
this summary reporting shipments by county and waybilling station has greatly
diminished. We are, therefore, discontinuing publication of rail shipment
data by county and waybilling station effective with this issue.

Domestic rail shipments and available truck and air shipments will continue
to be published in Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Shipment Totals, FVUS-7.
Beginning with shipments for calendar year 1978, we will publish shipments by
commodities, states of origin and months and by states of origin, commodities
and months. We will continue to publish in the same summary imports of
various commodities from official records of the U. S. Department of Commerce
and will continue to identify exports of Arizona, California, Florida and
Texas citrus fruits.

PR E FACE

This summary reports shipments of fresh fruits and vegetables by States of
origin. States for which shipments are reported in limited volume are reported
in a single table outlining rail shipments by commodities, waybilling stations
and months and truck shipments by commodities and months. Two tables are shown
for those States which originate substantial rail shipments of the reported
products. Table A summarizes rail and truck shipments by commodities and months
for each State. Table B reports rail shipments by commodities, counties,
waybilling stations and months. A third table Table C for California and
Florida shows segregation of rail-truck (piggyback) shipments by commodities,
counties, waybilling stations and months. These rail-truck shipments are in-
cluded in the totals by commodities and months, and counties and stations as
reported in Tables A and B and should not be interpreted to be in addition to
total rail shipments shown in those tables. Rail-truck from other States is
identified by R/T adjacent to station name. Rail-truck is reported by actual
van count. Each van is counted the same as a standard refrigerator car.

Truck shipments for all commodities and origins are not available. Those ob-
tainable are reported, but should not be interpreted to represent complete
truck movements. Arizona and Florida truck represent interstate movement only.
Truck reported for all other States is collected at shipping points and in-
cludes both inter and intrastate movements.

A list of commodities reported in this summary and an index of the State tables
are shown on page 4. A table outlining representative factors used to convert
truck, boat and air to rail carlot equivalents is shown on page 5.

The detail tables by commodities and waybilling stations identify export ship-
ments as such. Air shipments of California and Florida products are identified
in those tables.

Cooperation of transportation agencies in reporting rail and air movements and
State officials assisting in reporting all truck data is hereby gratefully
acknowledged.
