SEEDSMEN TO PRODUCE 3 PERCENT LESS VEGETABLE SEED

Vegetable seed output will decline 3 percent in 1982, according to the
latest report from America's seedsmen. Plans call for production of 225
million pounds (102 million kilograms) of vegetable seeds from 148 thousand
acres (60.0 thousand hectares). Vine crops (melons, cucumbers and squash),
peas and peppers are slated for smaller seed production; while sweet corn,
spinach, and green bean seedsmen will likely produce more in 1982 than they
did in 1981.

In 1981, seedsmen produced 233 million pounds (106 million kilograms) of
vegetable seeds, down 12 percent from 1980 output, but 9 percent more than had
been expected last March. Area harvested for seed totaled 154 thousand acres
(62.2 thousand hectares), a decline of 14 percent from 1980. Less seed was
harvested from carrots, green beans, peas, cucumbers, watermelons and tomatoes
than in the previous year. Output gains were registered in sweet corn, onion,
radish and summer squash seed.

This report, prepared by the Crop Reporting Board, is based on a survey of
65 seed companies and growers who represent virtually all of the vegetable
seed production in the United States. Each firm was mailed a questionnaire in
mid February. Those not responding by early March were contacted by telephone.
The 1982 data throughout this bulletin are based on growers' and dealers'
intentions. Vegetable seeds actually harvested in 1982 may vary from those
indicated for reasons such as weather, demand for seed, availability of
inputs, and the effect of this report. Export data as reported by the Bureau
of the Census and repeated in the Foreign Agriculture Circular (FAS, USDA) are
shown on page 11.

NOTICE -
Major modifications in the program of the Statistical Reporting Service
are required to stay within fiscal 1982 funding levels. As a result,
all seed reports and a large number of other reports are being discon-
tinued or altered. This is the last issue of "Vegetable Seeds." No
other seed reports will be issued unless funds are obtained for data
collection, summarization and publication. For additional information
concerning these program changes contact: Robert L. Schulte, Chief,
Crops Branch, SRS (202) 447-2127 or Robert L. Addison, Head, Cotton and
Special Crops Section (202) 447-3843.
