Layers, Potential Layers, Rate of Lay and Egg Production
Monthly 1967-1968

Release:
March 4, 1969
3:00 P.M. EST

Egg production in 1968 totaled 69,326 million eggs, according to the Crop
Reporting Board. The 1968 production was 1 percent below the 1967 record pro-
duction of 70,031 million eggs.

Layer numbers during 1968 averaged 315.2 million -- down slightly from the
1967 average of 317.0 million. The annual average rate of lay per layer on hand
in 1968 was 220 eggs compared with 221 in 1967.

Potential layers (hens and pullets of laying age plus pullets 3 months old and
older not of laying age) on farms January 1, 1969 are estimated at 363 million,
down 3 percent from a year earlier. Of the 363 million birds, 87 percent were of
laying age, and 13 percent were pullets 3 months old or older not of laying age.
Pullets under 3 months old are estimated at 50. 1 million birds. On January 1, 1969
the laying flock was composed of 55 percent pullets and 45 percent hens.
