Egg Production


Egg production in the year ending November 30, 1974 totaled 66,045 million
eggs, according to the Crop Reporting Board. The 1974 production was 1 percent
below the 66,579 million eggs produced in 1973.

Layer numbers during 1974 averaged 286 million, down 2 percent from the 293
million average of 1973. The annual average production per layer on hand in 1974
was 231 eggs, up 1 percent from the 227 in 1973.

Potential layers (hens and pullets of laying age plus pullets 3 months old
and older not of laying age) on hand December 1, 1974 totaled 331 million, 5 per-
cent below a year earlier. Of the 331 million birds, 86 percent were of laying
age and 14 percent were pullets 3 months old or older not of laying age.
