Shipments
By Commodities, States, and Months

FVUS-7 Calendar Year 1978

PREFACE

This summary publishes domestic rail and piggyback shipments, available truck and
air shipments and exports of fresh fruits and vegetables by commodities, modes of
transportation, origins and months. Available domestic boat shipments from U.S. pos-
sessions and imports from foreign countries are also shown. All amounts are shown in
units of 1,000 hundredweight.

Rail and piggyback shipments were reported by rail carriers which issued the ini-
tial line-haul revenue waybills. Rail shipments are those moving in refrigerated
cars. Piggyback shipments include those moving in trailer-on-flat-car and container-
on-flat-car service.

Truck and air shipments for all commodities and origins are not available. Those
obtainable are reported but should not be interpreted to represent complete movements.
Arizona and Florida truck data represent interstate movement only. Truck shipments
reported from all other states are collected at shipping points and include both inter
and intrastate movements. California air shipments are reported by originating car-
riers. Florida and Washington air shipments are collected at shipping points.

Exports of Arizona, California, and Florida citrus and Texas citrus and dry
onions are identified. Arizona and California citrus export data were obtained from
the Federal marketing order administrative committees. Florida citrus export data
were obtained from the Federal-State inspection service. Texas exports were reported
by shippers.

Information on domestic boat shipments from U.S. possessions was obtained from
boat lines at port cities where market news offices are maintained. Data on imports
from foreign countries were obtained from official records of the U.S. Department of
Commerce.

A commodity classification table is shown on page 4. Major items are specifi-
cally identified, while minor commodities are grouped together and classified under an
appropriate commodity heading. A table of net weights for the most commonly used con-
tainers for major commodities is shown on page 5. Net weights for other commodities
shown in this summary, as well as factors used to convert rail cars and piggyback vans
to weight units, are available upon request.

Tables of total reported domestic shipments by commodities, months, and modes of
transportation are shown on pages 6, 7 and 8. Tables of domestic shipments by ori-
gins, months, and modes of transportation are shown on pages 9 and 10.

The following abbreviations were used to identify California shipments by dis-
tricts: ND-Northern District; CD-Central District; SD-Southern District; IV-Imperial
Valley.

Cooperation of railroad, air, and steamship agents, members of the produce indus-
try, and officials of State Departments of Agriculture, farmers' markets, and the
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture is
gratefully acknowledged.
