PREFACE

This summary reports domestic rail, boat and available truck and air shipments of
fresh fruits and vegetables by commodities, origins and months. Imports taken from
official records of the U. S. Department of Commerce are also reported. Exports of
Arizona, California, Florida and Texas citrus are identified. Florida citrus exports
were obtained from the Inspection Service. Texas citrus exports were reported by
shippers. Arizona and California citrus exports were obtained from the citrus Admin-
istrative Committees.

Shipments shown in detailed tables are rail shipments, including rail-truck (piggyback)
moving on initial line-haul waybills. Rail-truck is identified by the symbol R/T ad-
jacent to State of origin. "Air" identifies air movements. Domestic truck shipments
and imports are incomplete, but identified and reported where movement data were
available.

Truck shipments for all commodities and origins are not available. Those obtainable
are reported, but should not be interpreted to represent complete truck movements.
Arizona and Florida truck represent interstate movement only. Truck reported for all
other States is collected at shipping points and includes both inter and intrastate
movements.

The following abbreviations were used to identify California shipments by districts:
ND Northern District; CD Central District; SD Southern District and IV Imperi-
al Valley.

Factors used to convert air, truck and boat to rail carlot equivalents are outlined on
page 3.

Cooperation of railroad, air and steamship agents, and officials of State departments
of agriculture and farmers' markets, as well as members of the produce industry, is
gratefully acknowledged.
