REPORT FT 600

0oCUT DEPA L AREA BY U.S. COASTAL DISTRICT
UNI ERST FLORIoD
GInESNVfI.E. FORIOA

This report contains data on U.S. waterborne
trade, presenting shipping weight information on
trade between foreign trade areas and U.S. coastal
districts. The report contains information by type
of vessel service on exports of domestic and foreign
merchandise, general imports, and data for Depart-
ment of Defense controlled cargo exported under U.S.
foreign aid programs combined with Special Cat-
egory non-Department of Defense controlled cargo.
The shipping weight figures shown in this report
represent the gross weight of shipments, including
the weight of containers, wrappings, and crates.

Foreign Trade Areas

The foreign trade areas shown in this report
are defined in Schedule R, Code Classification and
Definitions of Foreign Trade Areas (copies avail-
able from the Bureau of the Census). Exports by
vessel are credited to the foreign trade area in
which the merchandise was unladen while imports
are credited to the trade area in which the mer-
chandise was laden.

U.S. Coastal Districts
The U.S. coastal districts for which information
is presented in this report are defined as follows:

a. North Atlantic Includes ports along the
eastern seaboard from the northern boundary
of Maine to the southern boundary of Virginia.

b. South Atlantic Includes ports along the
eastern seaboard from the northern boundary
of North Carolina to, but not including, Key
West, Florida. Also included are all ports
in Puerto Rico.

c. Gulf Includes all ports along the Gulf of
Mexico from Key West, Florida, to Browns-
ville, Texas, inclusive.

JULY 1964

d. South Pacific lIcudes al ports4n the States
of California and Hawaii.

e. North Pacific Includes all ports in the States
of Oregon, Washington, and Alaska.

f. Great Lakes Includes all ports bordering
upon the Great Lakes and their connecting
waterways as well as all ports in the State
of New York on the St. Lawrence River.

Types Of Vessel Service

In this report information on dry cargo shipments
is shown separately for liner and irregular or tramp
vessels. Liner service is that type of service offered
by a regular line operator of vessels on berth. The
itineraries and sailing schedules of vessels in liner
service are predetermined and fixed. Irregular or
tramp service is that type of service afforded by
vessels, other than tanker vessels, which are
chartered or otherwise hired for the carriage of
goods on special voyages. Vessels in this type of
service are not on berth and their sailing schedules
are not predetermined or fixed. Tanker vessels are
those primarily designed for the carriage of liquid
cargoes in bulk while all others are classified as
dry cargo vessels.

Data Presented In Tables In This Report

Tables 1, 2, and 3 of this report present data on
exports of domestic and foreign merchandise on liner,
irregular, and tanker service vessels, respectively,
by trade area and coastal district, showing total
amounts carried on all vessels and amount carried
on U.S. flag vessels. The statistics in tables 1, 2,
and 3 include nongovernment shipments, government
financed economic assistance shipments under the
Mutual Security Program, and shipments to U.S.
civilian government agencies. Shipments of Special
Category commodities are not included in tables 1,
2, and 3.

D

Tables 4, 5, and 6 contain information on general
imports of merchandise which represent imports
for immediate consumption plus entries into Customs
bonded warehouses. Separate data are presented
for liner, irregular, and tanker service vessels, by
trade area and coastal district.

Tables 7, 8, and 9 contain data on shipments of
Department of Defense controlled cargo exported
under U.S. foreign aid programs combined with
Special Category non-Department of Defense con-
trolled cargo, presented in the same arrangement
as the statistics in the preceding tables. The data
in tables 7, 8, and 9 are not included in the export
statistics in tables 1, 2, and 3. Shipments of
Department of Defense controlled cargo represent
exports under special foreign aid programs such as
Department of Defense Military Assistance Pro-
gram-Grant-Aid, etc., shipped on commercial or
military vessels (vessels owned and operated by the
Department of Defense). Special Category shipments
are those for which detailed information cannot be re-
leased for security reasons. A list of Special
Category Commodities is available upon request to
the Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C. 20233.

The figures in this report exclude information
on certain types of transactions, as indicated below:

1. Arrivals or departures of cargo moving in
transit under bond through the United States
from one foreign country to another. Infor-
mation on such shipments moving by vessel
is presented in Report FT 985, Waterborne
Foreign Trade Statistics.

2. Imports and exports by mail or parcel post
and vessels moving under their own power
or afloat.

3. U.S. Trade with Puerto Rico and with
U.S. possessions. Information on this trade
is presented in Report FT 800.

4. Exports to U.S. military forces of supplies
and equipment for their own use and
American goods returned to this country by
U.S. military forces for their own use. In
general, the statistics include exports to
U.S. civilian government agencies abroad
and imports by U.S. civilian and military
agencies, other than those mentioned above
as being excluded.
5. Shipments to Canada individually valued at
less than $2,000 and shipments to countries
other than Canada individually valued at
less than $500 are excluded from the sta-
tistics on exports of domestic and foreign
merchandise and non-Department of Defense
shipments of Special Category commodities.

6. Import shipments on military vessels
(vessels owned and operated by the Depart-
ment of Defense).

7. Imports reported on informal entries (by
definition, valued not more than $250) and
imports valued at less then $100 reported
on formal entries.
