VEGETABLE HIGHLIGHTS

BEANS

Florida growers shipped 2,629,000 packages of beans for the 1984-85 season. This was a 13 percent decrease
compared to the 3,031,000 crates shipping 1983-84. The Pompano Beach Farmers Market shipped 96,000 packages
in the 1984-85 season as compared with 585,000 packages for 1983-84.

Green beans were grown throughout Florida, but the southeast remained the dominant area. Pole beans were
grown primarily in Dade County with only small amounts produced in other counties.

Early growing conditions were favorable for growers in the Pompano Beach area and Dade County. Damage by
freezing in late January ruined all but very light acreage in Dade County. Only very light supplies were
available until a new crop matured in late March.

Shipping point prices reflected the below normal supplies. Prices for green beans packed in 30 Ib crates
for the fall period ranged from $6.00 to $13.00 with the lowest prices received early in the season while
the highest occurred the week of November 24. For the winter and early spring, prices ranged from $6.00 to
$25.00. The lowest price was received in late December. In February and March, prices jumped to the
season's high of $25.00. The first week of April prices were $10.00-$12.00, the market gradually declined
and at season's end June 5th were $5.00.

Round green beans were packed mostly in bushel wirebound crates and hampers. Poles were packed primarily
in bushel hampers.

CABBAGE

Florida growers shipped 3,680,000 crates of cabbage during the 1984-85 season. This was 11 percent
increase compared to 3,308,000 crates shipped during 1982-83. Cold temperatures in late January caused
substantial damage in Central and North Florida. South Florida, was largely undamaged. This was very
similar to the 1984-84 season freeze. Fairly light supplies were available until Northern Florida areas
began new harvest in mid April.

Prices in early December were $4.50 per crate or carton. Early February prices were $8.00-$10.00 and ranged
from $7.00 to $10.00 through March. Volume increased and prices fluctuated between $4.00 and $7.00 closing
at $6.00 on June 1st.

Round green type cabbage was packed in a 1 3/5 and 1 3/4 bushel crates, 50 pound cartons and 50 pound
sacks. Some Red and Savoy types were also produced.

CARROTS

Florida growers shipped 1,197,000 sacks of fresh market carrots during the harvest season of 1984-85. This
was nearly 28 percent more than the 934,000 shipped during 1983-84.

Growing conditions were good early in the season. However, January freezing temperatures caused some damage
in central Florida mature fields. Supplies continued fairly light through March and early April, until
replanted fields began harvests.

Prices for regular carrots ranged from $4.00 to $7.00 per sack of 48 1 pound film bags medium-large size.

CAULIFLOWER

Florida growers shipped 459,000 cartons of cauliflower from the state during 1984-85. This was 35 percent
more than the 339,000 cartons shipped during 1983-84. No official acreage estimates were available for the
crop. The harvest period generally runs from late November to the end of April. There were very light
supplies during February this year, due to January freeze.

Prices for carton film wrapped 12s, generally ranged $7.00-$11.00 throughout the season.

CELERY

Florida growers shipped 4,033,000 crates of celery during the 1984-85 season. This was nearly 10 percent
decrease compared to the 4,458,000 crates shipped during 1983-84.

Early transplanting was completed on schedule and growing conditions were generally good. Damage by the
January freeze was moderate. Yields this season were comparable to last season.

Prices from November through April ranged from $4.00 to $8.00 per crate of 2 dozen stalks during the 1984-
85 harvest season, May and June prices ranged $7.00-$12.00.

Celery varieties were mostly unchanged. The fourteen inch wirebound crates remained the principal shipping
container followed by the fourteen inch plastic container.

CORN

In the 1984-85 crop year Florida growers shipped 7,660,000 crates of sweet corn compared to the 6,876,000
crates shipped in 1983-84, an increase of 11 percent.

Growing conditions were good early in the season. However the January freeze destroyed nearly all
plantings. After salvage harvests there was only light scattered shipments throughout March. Normal
seasonal shipments were achieved in late April.

Prices for yellow corn started at $3.50 per crate in November and increased to $12.00 per crate in late
January as supplies declined. There was too few supplies to quote a market until the last of March when the
price was $12.00 through April 13, then declined gradually to $3.00, at seasons close on June 29th.

The main varieties of yellow corn grown included Summer Sweet, Winter Green, (Bell Ringer), and Guardian. A
lighter quantity of white corn was available during the season.

CUCUMBERS

Shipments for 1984-85 were 4,894,000 packages as compared with 4,399,000 packages for 1983-84. Cucumbers
were grown throughout the state but the largest portion was grown in the southwest and west central areas
of the state. Cucumbers are grown in the Fall, starting in late October and mostly finished in December.
The Spring crop begins in Mid-March and usually completed in June. Imports, mostly from Honduras, Bahamas,
Dominican Republic, and Jamaica are repacked in Florida during January, February and March.

Shipping point prices for waxed mediums packed in 1 1/9 bushel cartons ranged from $5.00 to $18.00. The
lowest prices were received early in the season during the period of early November to early December. The
highest prices were received late December and early March. As supplies increased in early May, prices
declined to a low of $6.00-$7.00, then Increased by mid-June to $7.00-$8.00.

Cucumbers were primarily packed in 1 1/9 bushel cartons and 24 count cartons.

EGGPLANT

Growers shipped 1,388,000 packages of eggplant in 1984-85 as compared with 1,194,000 packages in 1983-84.
Pompano Beach Farmers Market shipped 826,000 packages, 133,000 packages more than the previous year.

Eggplant was grown throughout the state but the southeast section accounted for the heaviest supply.
Growing conditions were generally good. Cold weather in January reduced supplies for the early spring
period. Supplies were especially light during late February and March. Harvesting began in Central and
North Florida in late May.

Market conditions were poor for the fall and early winter periods. Shipping point prices ranged mostly
from $3.00 to $6.00 with the lowest prices received in December. On January 26 bushel cartons peaked at
$11.00. Market prices during April, May and June ranged mostly $3.50-$5.00.

In the 1984-85 growing season, Florida growers shipped 1,595,000 crates of endive and escarole. This was
10 percent less than the 1,776,000 crates shipped during the 1983-84 crop year.

Prices started in November at $3.00 per crate but ranged to $8.00-$10.00 per crate during late January
through early March. During April and may prices ranged from $3.00-$4.00. As with other crops, unusually
cold weather during last part of January had its effect. Volume remained fairly steady as growers rushed
planting to harvest schedules at times and harvested some small plants.

The major shipping containers are the 1 1/9 bushel wirebound crate and a carton containing 24 heads.

LETTUCE

During the 1984-85 season Florida growers shipped 2,636,000 cartons of lettuce which was over 11 percent

84 shipments of 8,676,000 packages. The southwest area was the major production area although the
southeast coast and north and west central areas also produced a significant volume. California Wonder or
bell pepper was the major type grown, although Cubanelles, Hungarian Wax, Jalapenos, Fingerhots and
Longhots were grown in all areas to a lesser degree.

Early growing conditions were generally good. Cold weather in January destroyed most fields. Shipments
did not return to normal until April when new fields began harvest.

Shipping point prices on Bell type Peppers began the season at $8.00 per 1 1/9 bushel carton. As volume
increased, prices declined to $5.00-$6.00 in December. Supplies on hand after January freeze ranged 10.00-
$15.00. On April 13, the first reported market since February, prices were $15.00. As spring volume
increased, prices once again declined and ranged mostly $7.00-$9.00 for the remainder of the season.

Bell peppers were primarily packed in 1 1/9 bushel cartons. Fingerhots, Jalapenos and Hungarian Wax were
packed in 1/2 and 5/9 bushel cartons and crates. Longhots were packed mostly in bushel cartons and
Cubanelles were in 1 1/9 bushel cartons.

SOUTH FLORIDA POTATOES

7,800 acres in 1985 compared with 7,400 acres in 1984. Potatoes were grown in the Stuart, Ft. Myers and
Homestead areas from mid January to early May.

Growing conditions throughout the season were mostly good. Rain early in the season delayed some planting.
Harvesting began late January in the Stuart area. The Ft. Myers area began shortly after and the Homestead
area began in mid February. Supplies were light January and February. Volume increased in mid March and
peaked in mid April. Harvesting was generally completed by eary May.

The 1985 marketing season was successful pricewise. Early in the season prices for Round Reds packed in 50
pound sacks U.S. One washed were $7.00 to $8.00 in February and March. In April and early May the price
ranged $10.00 to $12.00.

South Florida potatoes were packed predominately in 50 pound sacks. The most common consumer packs were
the master film sack containing either 5 ten pound or 10 five pound bags. Trucks were used to ship most of
the potato crop although a few loads were shipped by piggyback rail.

NORTH FLORIDA POTATOES

This area centers around Flagler, Putnam and St. Johns Counties. Acreage harvested in north Florida was
27,000 compared to 25,000 in 1984.

Planting was completed by end of February. Growing conditions were drier than normal for most of the
season. Harvest began in mid April. Heaviest shipments occurred through May and the first week of June, with
peak movement during the week of May 18th.

Processing stock potatoes moved mostly on contract at generally $5.25 bulk per cwt. bulk. Most movement on
the open market in the $3.50 to $4.25 price range.

increase over the 1983-84 shipments of 5,568,000 cartons. Prices received during the year were generally
low, the crop was severely damaged by the freeze in January and normal shipments did not resume until late
February as new plantings matured. Prices at shipping point for Red Globe type packed in cartons of 30 6
ounce film bags ranged generally from $2.00 to $3.00, with a peak on February 2nd of $5.00 to $6.00. Some
red radishes were also packed in cartons containing 14 1 pound film bags, 24 8 ounce film bags and 40
pound film bags. White radishes were packed in cartons containing 24 8 ounce film bags.

Radishes were shipped by truck and by piggyback vans.

The four winter types were acorn, butternut, spaghetti and a light volume of buttercup.

The southeast coast remained the major production area. Other areas producing squash were the Ft. Myers-
Immokalee and Wauchula-Plant City areas. Late spring squash was grown in the Alachua and Quincy areas.

Growing conditions were mostly good, except for the January freeze that destroyed most fields except for
light acreage in the Dade County area. Peak volume in the fall was reached the week of December 1st with
98,000 packages shipped. Volume of the spring crop was heavy from mid March through mid May.

The shipping point prices for zucchini in 1/2 bushel cartons or 5/9 bushel crates generally ranged from
$3.00 to $20.00. The highest prices were received during the mid-March. The lowest prices were received in
the fall and late spring. Yellow Straightneck ranged from,$3.00 to $15.00. The highest prices were
received in late January. The lowest prices were received in late spring. Yellow crookneck packed
primarily in bushel hampers and crates returned $5.00 to $25.00. The highest prices were received in March
and the lowest in late spring.

Yellow crookneck was primarily packed in bushel hampers and crates. Zucchini and yellow straightneck were
packed in 1/2 and 5/9 bushel cartons and crates. Acorn and butternut were packed in 1 1/9 bushel crates.

STRAWBERRIES

Florida strawberry acreage for the 1984-85 season was 5,300 acres, compared to 5,200 acres during 1983-84.

Florida shipments for 1984-85 season were 4,216,000 flat caretons. This was an increase of 13 percent
compared to 1983-84 shipments of 3,726,000 cartons. The major container for shipping continued to be a flat
containing 12 pints. Most movement was by truck with loads generally palletized with 96 flats per pallet.

Planting began in mid October and was completed by early November. The major varieties planted were Tufts,
Pajaro, Douglas and a small acreage of other varieties.

Harvest started in early December. Freezing temperatures in January severely damaged the crop. January and
February supplies were very light. Good volume began again in March with the week ending March 28th being
the peak shipping week this season.

The shipping point prices ranged from $10.00 to $18.00 per flat early in the season to $4.00 to $5.00 per
flat at the end of the season when volume was heavy and competition from California increased.

TOMATOES

Florida growers shipped 50,156,000 25 pound cartons during 1984-85 which was nearly 18 percent more than
the 42,540,000 shipped during the 1983-84 season. Shipment of tomatoes began in mid October with the week
of November 17th being the peak week for the Ruskin-Palmetto fall crop. Dade County's peaked during
January 12th and May 11th was the peak week for the Ruskin-Palmetto spring crop. Light volume was shipped
from the Panhandle area during June.
The most significant factors during the 1984-85 crop year was the January that destroyed most of the crop
except for fairly light acreage in the Dade County area. Supplies were very light and normal production was
not attained until mid April. Prices received during 1983-84 ranged from $4.00 to $19.00 per 25 pound
carton of 5x6 size mature greens.
