This was a 13 percent decrease compared to the 3,031,000 crates shipping 1983-84. The Pompano Beach Farmers Market shipped 96,000 packages in the 1984-85 season as compared with 585,000 packages for 1983-84. Green beans were grown throughout Florida, but the southeast remained the dominant area. Pole beans were grown primarily in Dade County with only small amounts produced in other counties. Early growing conditions were favorable for growers in the Pompano Beach area and Dade County. Damage by freezing in late January ruined all but very light acreage in Dade County. Only very light supplies were available until a new crop matured in late March. Shipping point prices reflected the below normal supplies. Prices for green beans packed in 30 Ib crates for the fall period ranged from $6.00 to $13.00 with the lowest prices received early in the season while the highest occurred the week of November 24. For the winter and early spring, prices ranged from $6.00 to $25.00. The lowest price was received in late December. In February and March, prices jumped to the season's high of $25.00. The first week of April prices were $10.00-$12.00, the market gradually declined and at season's end June 5th were $5.00. Round green beans were packed mostly in bushel wirebound crates and hampers. Poles were packed primarily in bushel hampers. CABBAGE Florida growers shipped 3,680,000 crates of cabbage during the 1984-85 season. This was 11 percent increase compared to 3,308,000 crates shipped during 1982-83. Cold temperatures in late January caused substantial damage in Central and North Florida. South Florida, was largely undamaged. This was very similar to the 1984-84 season freeze. Fairly light supplies were available until Northern Florida areas began new harvest in mid April. Prices in early December were $4.50 per crate or carton. Early February prices were $8.00-$10.00 and ranged from $7.00 to $10.00 through March. Volume increased and prices fluctuated between $4.00 and $7.00 closing at $6.00 on June 1st. Growing conditions were good early in the season. However, January freezing temperatures caused some damage in central Florida mature fields. Supplies continued fairly light through March and early April, until replanted fields began harvests. Prices for regular carrots ranged from $4.00 to $7.00 per sack of 48 1 pound film bags medium-large size. CAULIFLOWER Florida growers shipped 459,000 cartons of cauliflower from the state during 1984-85. This was 35 percent more than the 339,000 cartons shipped during 1983-84. Prices from November through April ranged from $4.00 to $8.00 per crate of 2 dozen stalks during the 1984- 85 harvest season, May and June prices ranged $7.00-$12.00. Celery varieties were mostly unchanged. The fourteen inch wirebound crates remained the principal shipping container followed by the fourteen inch plastic container. CORN In the 1984-85 crop year Florida growers shipped 7,660,000 crates of sweet corn compared to the 6,876,000 crates shipped in 1983-84, an increase of 11 percent.
