Port George, Nevis In October of 1996, Caribbean Volunteer Expedition volunteers measured the shipping port on the south shore of Nevis. This work was done for the Nevis Field Studies Centre, as part of their investigation ofthis site.. We wish to thank David Rollison and David arid Joan Robinson for all their help while we were in Nevis. Our work consisted of photographing and measuring the ruins. We have enclosed color and black and prints with a fIlap indicating where each photograph was taken. We.also prepared a site plan, and larger drawings of the main U shaped structure, including floor plans, and wall elevations. The Nevis Field Studies Centre had cleared lJlt:tchof the ruins; however, parts were still quite overgrown, (with machineel), this made measuring difficult. The ruins consisted of a Ushapedstructure.AtVall on the north had a bevel top, and a kitchen and chimney at the east end .. Two parallel walls, which --.-probably once had a roof, were ott the east. The most eastern wall had ventilation slits. On the south was a high wall which was part ofatwo story building. On.the south, next to the sea, was a sharp drop off of about 15 feet, and the walls and floor structure on the south were falling into the sea. We could see parts of the walls at the bottom of the drop off. On the western part of the site, were low foundation walls, and wall renmants of previous structures. Across a steepgullywere additional low walls ( 6 inches to 3 feet) of additional buildings. These had also partially fallen into the sea. The standing walls were rubble stone, with a cut stone facing on both sides. The stone work was Well crafted .. Some ;ofthe facing stone was missing probably due to removalJor other uses; ManY of the openings were arches, from cut stone. CVE is a non-profit organization which recruits volunteers from the USA and Canada, to work with preservation agencies in the Caribbean on historic preservation projects.. On this trip our volunteers included: Anne and Lee Hersh, Coming, NY; Suzaune Gordon, Valley Forge, PA: Mary Geiger and Fred Vogt, Guilford, CT; MC Halvorsen, BC, Canada; Laura Drons, Brooklyn, NY.
