Foreign Market Developments

Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As required of all
signatories to the GATT Standards Code, the following notifications of foreign
proposed standards-related rules have been provided for the information and comment
of interested agencies and firms. The Technical Office invites inquiries from anyone
who believes that any of the proposed regulations notified under this heading could
cause a trade problem. Questions can be referred to Thomas O'Connell, USDA Technical

Japan. The Consumer Economy Division of the Food and Marketing Bureau, Ministry of
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has proposed an amendment to the labeling
standards for bacon and ham. Ham labeling standards will be changed as follows:

(1) The definition of lachs ham will be revised to clarify that these
products are non-heated and that "other labelling items" and "method of
labelling" are eliminated for existing labeling items; and

(2) Regarding non-heated ham with bones, the indication that the products
are non-heated meat products will be required to be given near the space for
the name of the products.

Bacon labeling standards will be changed as follows:

(1) Regarding non-heated bacon, the indication that the products are
non-heated meat products will be required to be given near the space for the
name of the products;

(2) "Preservation temperature" which is required by existing labeling
standards will be changed to "storage instruction", and "minimum durability
period" is added to the existing labeling items; and








(3) Regarding bacon and shoulder bacon which are cut into blocks or slices,
"date of processing and packing" and "name of processor and packer" are added
to the existing labeling items.

NOTE: Lachs ham is a lightly cured ham, generally imported from Germany.

Cremona Dairy Cattle Show. The 37th Cremona Dairy Cattle Show will be held in
Cremona, Italy, September 17-26. This show is considered to be the most important
dairy event of the year, attracting the attention of international and Italian
breeders alike. Specialized exhibits feature domestic and international dairy
animals, semen, diverse feed manufactures and agricultural equipment. Animal
competitions and technical programs also provide an important dimension to the fair.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will participate in the 1982 Crenona Show with a
semipermanent pavilion. The participation fee this year will be $400.00. Deadline

U.S. Foods Product Display Philippines. You are invited to join a Foreign
Agricultural Service (FAS) sponsored U.S. Foods Product Display in Manila,
Philippines, December 2-3, 1982. The Philippines is an important dollar market for
U.S. agricultural products, U.S. exports to that market having reached $319.2 million
in 1980. Processed or consumer-ready foods accounted for $9.1 million of this total.

A survey conducted by our Agricultural Counselor in the Philippines has identified
the following items as products offering sales opportunity: beef, turkey, oranges,
raisins, apples, canned peaches, dry beans and wines. The participation fee is
$200.00. While representation is not required, we strongly urge each participant
firm to be represented by either an agent or company official.
