TECHNICAL OFFICE

Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As required of all
signatories to the GATT Standards Code, the following notifications of foreign proposed
standards-related rules have been provided for the information and comment of interested
agencies and firms. The Technical Office invites inquiries from anyone who believes that
any of the proposed regulations notified under this heading could cause a trade problem.
From time to time we also receive information through our embassies in foreign countries, as
is the case this week. Request for copies or questions can be referred to Carolyn Wilson,
USDA Technical Office, Foreign Agricultural Service, Room 5530 South Agriculture Building,
Washington, D.C. 20250; or phone (202) 382-1318. Anyone interested in commenting on the
proposals should include the TBT Notification Number in their communication.

Bahrain The Technical Office recently received a copy of Bahrain's most recent proposal on
shelf life requirements which will become effective February 1, 1985. We also have a
translation of the draft of Bahrain's new import regulations.

EC At the request of the Technical Office the EC Information Center has put together a
compilation of Directives to update our records on color additives and preservatives

New Zealand Draft New Zealand Flavouring regulations just arrived. This proposal has a
wider coverage than before. The term flavouringg agent" has been introduced to define both
flavouring substances and flavour enhancers. Comments on the proposal will be accepted
until September 28, 1984.

Saudi Arabia The Agricultural Trade Officer in Jiddah sent a copy of an August 12 press
release which states that "At instructions of Prince Sultan: All contracts, ads, signs and
names and descriptions of commodities must be written in Arabic."

Tunisia The Technical Office just received an unofficial English translation of Tunisian
draft regulations on labelling of packaged foodstuffs.

United Kingdom At the request of the Technical Office the Agricultural Trade Office in
London put together information on U.K. regulations relating to fruit juice. The results
are a thorough coverage of regulations on the subject which we would be happy to share with
exporters who would find the information useful.

MARKET DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

SAUDIFOOD 85 to be held in Riyadh, February 10-14

SaudiFood 85, the third International Food and Equipment exhibition for Saudi Arabia, will
be held in Riyadh, February 10-14, 1985, in conjunction with the first SaudiFood Processing
and Packaging show, created specifically for the rapidly expanding Arab markets.

SaudiFood again will provide trade buyers in Saudi Arabia with their only opportunity to see
the entire food, catering and equipment industries under one roof. National groups and
individual companies planning to exhibit at the show already are requesting larger sites
than in 1983, when all exhibition space had been allocated by September 1982, nearly five
months before the show opened.

Buyers attending SaudiFood will represent the major sectors of the industry, including
importers and wholesalers, supermarkets, department stores, retail outlets, food processors,
hotel and restaurants, government agencies, schools, hospitals, armed forces, oil and
construction industries, contract caterers, airline and shipping companies.

Further information can be obtained from Eileen Lavine, Information Services, Inc., 4733
Bethesda Ave., Suite 735, Bethesda, MD 20814; (301) 656-2942.

Kuwait Agricultural Exhibition

The Kuwait International Fair (KSC) company invites international participation in the third
annual agricultural exhibition to be held March 6-12, 1985. The event will be staged at the
International Hall, International Fair Ground, Misbrif, Kuwait.

The state of Kuwait has given special importance to the production of agricultural food
products. The government recently established an Office of Agricultural Affairs and Fish
Resources to supervise the development of the agricultural sector and to implement a plan
aimed at increasing the role and contribution of agriculture to the economy.

The management of the Kuwait International Fair has endevored to establish a regular annual
agricultural exhibition in Kuwait, offering local specialist and other interested parties an
opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest in modern agricultural equipment,
methods and processes.

The agricultural show is expected to include exhibitors of agricultural equipment, tree
samplings, indoor decorative plants, animal feed, fertilizer, seed, pesticides, poultry
processing equipment and green house supplies.

Exhibit rates are Kuwait Dinar 24 (approximately U.S. $84) per square meter for space inside
the hall and Kuwait Dinar 12 (approximately U.S. $42) per square meter for space in the open
space outside the hall.
