Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As
required of all signatories to the CATT Standards Code, this notification
of foreign proposed standards-related rules has been provided for the
information and comment of interested agencies and firms. The Technical

regulations notified under this heading could cause a trade problem.

Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture has proposed an "Amendment to
Labelling Standard for Ham" which requires the following information in
addition to name of food and list of ingredients: (1) storage instruction,
minimum durability period; (2) date of processing and packing, name and
address of packer (in case of the products which are cut into blocks or
sliced and packed); (3) country of origin.

Austria. The Austrian Ministry for Health and Environmental Protection has
proposed updating the order concerning the importation and transit of live
animals, animal raw materials and products, as well as objects which could
bear infection matters of contagious veterinary diseases. These changes
include higher security measures for newly discovered veterinary diseases
replace those that are no longer threatening. Also, special provisions are
made for changes in transport practices for these commodities.
