Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As
required ;f all signatories to the GATT Standards Code, this notification
of foreign proposed standards-related rules has been provided for the
information and comment of interested agencies and firms. The Technical
Office invites inquiries from anyone who believes that any of the proposed
regulations notified under this heading could cause a trade problem.

Finland. The Finland National Board of Health has proposed 1) to prohibit
such use of fungicides containing benomyl which may cause residues in food,
and 2) to have reservations towards such use of wood preservatives containing
benomyl which can cause exposition to the workers.

Switzerland. The Switzerland Federal Bureau of Public Health has proposed
a revision of the 1936 foodstuffs ordinance, including revision of the defi-
nitions and ingredients and updating of labeling requirements of the following
products: cheese and cheese products, butter, margarine, edible fat mixtures,
mayonnaise, fruit juices, syrups, lemonade, pectin, jams and jellies, beer and
non-alcoholic beer, biscuits and rusks. Where possible, the CODEX Alimentarius
requirements have been taken into consideration.

New Zealand. The New Zealand Food Standards Committee has proposed regulations
to replace Articles 62 to 79 of the Food and Drug Regulations of 1973. These
proposed regulations update existing standards on bakery products, and include
definitions and a positive list of components and additives.

New Zealand. The New Zealand Food Standards Committee has proposed regulations
on datemarking of food. The proposal covers datemarking standards for short
life foods (those with a shelf life of one month or less), very short life
foods (dairy and meat products; bread), and other foods to be datemarked on
a voluntary basis.






Australia International Catering Trade Fair. IPC Exhibitions Pty Ltd. is
organizing an international exhibition for the food catering trade in
Sydney, Australia, June 20-24, 1982. The Previous exhibition in 1980
attracted about 27,500 visitors and 168 exhibitors representing 320
suppliers from Australia and other countries. U.S. items most suitable for
such a display would be high quality specialty products, products new to
market such coffee bags, and items like dry beans, peas and lentils and
