Foreign Trade Development

Prospective Mexican Beef Purchase. The Mexican government is reported to be
permitting the issuance of import permits for up to 85,000 carcasses of beef from the
United States. The import permits will be issued to Banrural (Rural Credit Bank) and
the beef will be sold in Mexico through Conasupo, a quasi government agency which,
among other functions, operates a number of wholesale and retail markets. Mr.
Aguilar Valdez is Vice President of Banrural and will be supervising the purchase of
the beef. Specifications are for U.S. standard and U.S. good beef and weights
generally in the 5/700 weight range. The U.S. good beef will be required to carry
the grade roller brand. Beef will be needed in the next few weeks.

Mexico has exported very little beef this past year and a very small number of feeder
cattle to the United States in 1981.
