Foreign Trade Developments

Indonesia doubles soybean import duty. An April 28 decree of the Indonesia
Ministry of Finance doubles the import duty and sales tax on soybeans to 10
percent each. This is expected to have a serious effect on soybean
imports. Indonesia had been a growing market for soybeans. Last year
Indonesian soybean imports increased 35 percent to 176,620 tons valued at
$56 million. The U.S. supplied 75 percent of the total -- $43 million.

Economic Community beef quota: The Beef Management Committee of the
Economic Community has announced that the third quarter high quality beef
quota for the U.S. will be 5,000 metric tons. European importers may apply
for license to import between July 1 and July 10, 1980.

Egypt exempts dehydrated chicken soups from customs duties. New customs
tariff published May 9, 1980, in the Official Gazette of the Arab Republic
of Egypt states that chicken soups (dehydrated) are exempt from customs
duties, while chicken soups (canned) are subject to a duty of 50 percent.
