Foreign Market Development
Korea: Joint venture, meat processing. Following are excerpts from a letter
recently received: Quote. At present we are growing more than 2,000 to 2,500 head
of breeding hogs and 20,000 to 25,000 head of marketed hogs.
The present total assets for our farms and a feed mill is roughly estimated between
US$ 15.- to 20.-million.
In addition to the "1986 Asian Games" and "1988 Olympics" to be held in Seoul, there
has been a healthy sign of fast food franchise/chain restaurant business like
"McDonald's", "Burger King", etc. eyed for the Korean market. Thus we are seriously
planning to engage in the field of Pork/Meat Processing business on a small or medium
size scale basis to produce "high Quality" meat products of ham/sausage/bacon, and/or
hamburger/cowmeat product, and so forth. We desire the technical and/or capital
joint venture of one of the most reputable and reliable U.S. meat processors and, for
this purpose, we have already secured a 132,000 square meters of the land for the
erection of the meat-processing plant.
If we could undertake this type of business in the joint venture with one of the
aforesaid, we will provide the land, factory/plant, and the man-power, while the
counterpart shall provide us with the technical know-how/license and/or processing
equipment/facility and/or joint capital investment. Some of the processed meat/pork
products shall be supplied to the domestic market, and the balance shall be exported
to the overseas market. Unquote. For further details contact: K. C. Hoh, Executive,
vice President, Cheh Breeding Stock Farm Inc., Seoul: Rm. 627 Dae Wang Bldg., No.

Livestock Exposition Colombia. National Brahman Exposition will be held in
Medellin, Colombia, November 11, 12, 13, 14, 1982. The second and third days will be
showing and judging, the last day will be showing and auction. U.S. Breeders, sales,
and shipping firms should find this of interest. Hotel and other arrangements need
to be made early. For further details contact Mr. Lloyd Holmes, Agricultural
Counselor, American Embassy, APO Miami 34038.
Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As required of all
signatories to the GAT Standards Code, the following notifications of foreign
proposed standards-related rules have been provided for the information and comment
of interested agencies and firms. The Technical Office invites inquiries from anyone
who believes that any of the proposed regulations notified under this heading could
couse a trade problem. Questions can be referred to Thomas O'Connell, USDA Technical
Office, Room 5530, South Agriculture Building, Washington, D.C. 20250. Phone: (202)
Canada. The Canada Department of National Health and Welfare has proposed an
amendment to the Food and Drug Regulations to reduce the maximum residue limits for
Captan to 5.0 parts per million (PPM) in apples, apricots, blueberries, cranberries,
cherries, grapes, peaches, pears, plums, raspberries, strawberries and tomatoes.
Japan Proposes to Restrict Two Food Additives (Correction). In Export Briefs Issue
No. #27, 1982, page 5, a small item appeared claiming that the Japanese Ministry of
Health and Walfare (MHW) has restricted use of Butylated Hydroxy Anisole (BHA) and
Potassium Bromate because laboratory tests have indicated they may be carcinogenic.
Please note that NHW has only proposed to restrict the use of BHA and Potassium
Bromate. Final action will occur later this summer pending findings of a team of
concerned government officials led by Sandy Miller of the Food and Drug
Administration, presently in Tokyo to discuss the BHA issue.
