MARKET DEVELOPMENT AC1IVIIlES

AIFE THE AUS1RALIAN 1iNEKNA110NAL FOOD & DRINK EXIHB11ON 22-25 September 198b

The Australian International Food & brink Exhibition returns to the Royal Exhibition
Building Melbourne in 1986. First staged in 1984 this event in just four days
established itself as Australia's international marketplace for the food and beverage
industry.

AJFE enabled foreign manufacturers and suppliers to establish new business contacts,
to identify agents and to generate sales to Australia's 23 billion dollar food and
beverage market. Ihe Australian International Food & Drink Exhibition is the largest
event of its kind in Australia. It is a specialised food and drink exhibition
including all food products and beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. It is
also a trade only show where members of the general public are not admitted. AIFE is
carefully targeted at an audience of importers, retailers and foodservice buyers.

Promotion and publicity for the exhibition will be directed equally at the retail and
catering sectors and will extend throughout Australia. In addition to the
advertising undertaken within Australia AIFE will be marketed in hew Zealand and in
key South Last Asian export markets. In 1984 AIFE attracted buyers from 16 foreign
countries satisfying the requirements of Australian manufacturers and providing a
valuable bonus for overseas exhibitors.

Ihe Australian International Food & Drink Exhibition forms part of a series of
successful international food shows staged in association with the London-based Andry
Montgomery group. lour participation is welcomed in this event which in 1984
attracted 183 exhibitors from 11 countries. With more than twice the available
exhibition space occupied in 1984 and firm commitments from major food exporting
nations AIFE 8b is certain to attract Australia's leading buyers.

Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As required of all
signatories to the GATI Standards Lode, the following notifications of foreign
proposed standards-related rules have been provided for the information and comment
of interested agencies and firms. Ihe technical Office invites inquiries from anyone
who believes that any of the proposed regulations notified under this heading could
cause a trade problem. From time to time we also receive information through our
embassies in foreign countries, as is the case this week. Requests for copies or
questions can be referred to Carolyn illmore Wilson, USDA technical Office, Building
072 BARL-EAS1, Beltsville, MD 20705; or telephone (301) 344-2651. After reviewing
a particular proposal, anyone interested in commenting on it should include the IBI
Notification Number in their communication.

Japan-IB1 Notification Number 85.114 the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry
and Fisheries, Livestock Industry Bureau, Commerical Feed Livision has announced a
proposal for an amendment (product covered-feedstuffs and feed additives) to the
regulation concerning the specifications on ingredients of feeds and feed additives.
Ihe amendment would desigante sodium alginate, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium
polyacrylate, glycerin fatty acid ester, sucrose fatty acid ester, sorbitan fatty
acid ester polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid ester, iron-proteninate, saccharin
sodium, flavour, avoparcin and morantel citrates as new feed additives and to
establish the specifications in ingredients and the standards of manufacturing
processes. The amendment would also delete caprylohydrocanic acid, macarbomycin,
bacitracin manganese and fradiomycin sulfate from the designated feed additives. In
addition, it would amend the specification on ingredients and the standards of
manufacturing processes of thiopeptin, choline chloride, pyrivocine hydrocholoride,
cyanoccealmin, thiamine mononitrate, L-ascorbic acid, inositol, potassium chloride,
calcium lactate, DL-calcium pantothenate, DL-methionie, potassium iodide and colbalt
sulfate. It would also make it possible that salinomycin sodium and monensin sodium
are added to feeds for fattening cattle. Ihe objective and rationale for the
proposal is to assure safety and improve quality of teed. Final date for comments on
this proposal is September 7, 1985.
