Foreign Market Developments:

Argentine Tariff Reductions on Food and Food Products. In decrees to be issued
shortly, Argentina will reduce import duties on 65 tariff line items covering a
wide range of food and food products.

Tariff reductions include various meat and poultry items (reduced from 10 percent
to zero), various prepared legumes, vegetables and fruit items (reduced from
45 percent to 25 percent) and various fresh fruit and vegetable items (reduced
from 10 percent to zero). Duty will be reduced to zero for poultry, fresh
chilled or frozen; almonds, in shell; apples; pears and quinces.

The Syrian General Organization for Fodder has requested all companies interested
in exporting grain and feed products to Syria to provide certain information
about their firm. This to include the following: (1) Full name, address,
cable and telex; (2) Information about products, methods production, specifi-
cations, source of raw materials; (3) Names of company officials and board
members, size of budget, and brief account of international activities; (4)
Document confirmed by official authority stating that the company has no agent
or other representation in Syria; (5) Certificate approved by the Syrian
Embassy (600 New Hampshire Avenue, N. W., Washington, D. C. 20037) stating
that the company specializes in processed feeds or feed trade. The organization
intends to avoid dealings with companies which do not provide the above infor-

African swine fever. Argentina has suspended indefinitely imports of swine
from all origins because of African swine fever outbreak in Brazil. Secretariat
of Agriculture officials are not able to predict when import suspension may
be lifted, but indications are that suspension will continue indefinitely.
