proposed standards-related rules have been provided for the information and comment
of interested agencies and firms. The Technical Office invites inquiries from anyone
who believes that any of the proposed regulations notified under this heading could
cause a trade problem. From time to time we also receive information through our

New Zealand TBT Notification 84.122. The New Zealand Department of Health has
proposed (product covered-food) changes to the regulations covering composition and
labelling of all food sold in New Zealand, which will then be called Food Regulationi
1984. The regulations represent a consolidation of the food provisions of the Food
and Drug Regulations 1973 and its amendments. The standards relating to meat, fish,
cheese, processed cheese, processed fruit and vegetables and special purpose foods
have been amended to bring them into line with changes in technology and align them
more closely with Codex standards. The objective and rationale for the proposal is
consumer protection and health. Proposed date of adoption and entry into force is
later in 1984. Sone labelling provisions will not come into force fully for 12
months. Final date for comments on the proposal is September 25, 1984.

Norway TBT Notification 84.138. The Norwegian Product Register announces (produ
covered-chemicals) the September 1, 1984 entry into force of paragraph 18 of the
Norwegian regulations concerning labelling, sale etc. of chemical substances and
products which may involve a hazard to health, dated November 26, 1982. The
objective and rationale for this action is the protection of human health and the
environment .

Finland TBT Notification 84.139. The Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Heal.
has announced a proposal (product covered-tobacco) to lower the maximum ammots of-'
harmful compounds allowed in commercial tobacco products and factory made
cigarettes. The proposal gives maximum amounts of harmful compounds as well s .
listing standard measurement methods for determining these amounts. The objective.
and rationale for the proposal is human health. Final date for comments on the
proposal is October 15, 1984.

Saudi Arabia The Technical Office recently received a copy of a new 1984 Saudi
Arabian Standards Organization Standard on Methods of Test for Corn Flakes, sad a
copy of a recently adopted Saudi Standard for Cereals and Pulses Sampling of 1
Products. Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO) has adopted the standard No.
2170/1980 as issued by International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
