Foreign Trade Developments

Officials of the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have confirmed
that importers and processors of pork have been asked to cut back on pork imports.
These actions were considered necessary to bring supply and demand back into
balance. MAFF has further indicated that new pork contracts will be cut back
and some deferred deliveries of existing contracts can be expected.

Pressure for this action comes thru the Japanese Diet from domestic pork
producers who decided on resolutions in a November 15 meeting to: (1) Cut back
on domestic production, (2) ask Government to influence importers and producers
to reduce imports.

Because of the temporary oversupply situation, domestic processors have already
put 100,000 carcasses in "isolation" stock with another 100,000 carcasses to
follow shortly. Importers are also considering the placing of 100,000 imported
carcasses in "isolation" stock.

pate in an FAS sponsored food exhibit in Cairo, Egypt, at the Meridien Hotel,
