Foreign Trade Developments

Abu Dhabi Food Labelling Requirements: On December 1, 1978, Abu Dhabi began
to enforce a local ordinance requiring that all foodstuffs bear labels with
the following information: Name and address of manufacturer; date of manufacture
and expiry; gross & net weight; list of all contents including preservatives,
flavoring or coloring agents, and other additives. Use of the Arabic language
is not required. The Embassy is aware of two cases where municipal officials
have refused to certify shipments because products did not have manufacturing
and expiry dates, one involving Danish beer and the second, canned American
Bloody Mary mix. The senior municipality health officer has said that dating
will be required on all products, regardless of whether this is customary in
other countries or if the product has a practically indefinite shelf life.
