Canada Status of Chemicals Changed. The U.S. Agricultural Counselor in Ottawa
recently informed the Foreign Agricultural Service/Washington that Canadian
Agriculture Minister Eugene Whelan has announced a change in status for 16 pesticide
The 16 chemicals in question had been placed under investigation because of suspect
studies completed by a private testing firm.
Health and Welfare Canada has cleared 11 registered chemicals which will now return
to the normal evaluation procedure. Four chemicals have been moved to the category
permitting new uses on a case-by-case basis and one chemical has been moved to the
category requiring special labeling.
It is proposed that one chemical is to have all registrations cancelled by January 1,
1983 unless the Minister of Health and Welfare Canada advises that adequate
justification has been provided to support an alternate course of action.
In addition, further consideration is being given to Health and Welfare's
recommendation to cancel registration of Allidochlor which is essential to onion
production in Canada. If there is no suitable replacement in time for the 1983
season, Allidochlor may be made available to onion growers on a restricted basis.
