Foreign Trade Development

Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As required of all
signatories to the GATT Standards Code, this notification of foreign proposed
standards-related rules has been provided for the information and comment of
interested agencies and firms. The Technical Office invites inquiries from anyone
who believes that any of the proposed regulations notified under this heading could

Norway. The Norway Ministry of Health and Social Affairs has proposed 1) regulations
on crude meat and meat products (meat regulations) and 2) forcemeat products produced
from animal and/or vegetable raw materials in mixture (mixed products regulations).
The meat regulations cover all kinds of crude meat materials and meat products,
produced on the basis of the edible parts of mammals and poultry. Requirments are
established for treatment, storing, sale, packing, etcetera of meat products. The
mixed products regulations cover the large potential range of forcemeat products
based on different raw materials in mixture and which are not regulated by other
legislation. Composite products such a pizza, stew, dried soups and the like fall
outside the regulations.

Norway. The Norway Ministry of Health and Social Affairs has proposed general
regulations for the manufacture and distribution of food products, and general
hygiene regulations for the manufacture and distribution of food products. The
proposed regulations shall supercede several existing special regulations concerning
the manufacture, distribution and sale of food products. The technical development
and the system of the CODEX Alimentarius guidelines which have been drawn up in
recent years, have also been taken into consideration.

Canada. The Canada Department of National Health and Welfare has proposed an
amendment to the Food and Drug Regulations which will establish maximum residue
limits for DDT and it metabolites in poultry, eggs and fresh vegetables and will
reduce the maximum residue limits for DDT and its metabolites in butter, cheese, milk
and other dairy products, meat, meat products and fat of cattle, hogs and sheep.

European Economic Community. The Commission of the European Economic Community has
proposed a Council Directive amending for the 17th time Directive 64/54/EEC in the
approximation of the laws of the member states concerning the preservatives
authorized for use in foodstuffs. The purpose of this proposal is to amend the annex
to the basic directive by specifying conditions for authorizing the use of potassium
bisuphite, thiabendazol and natamycine.

European Economic Community. The Commission of the European Economic Community has
proposed a Council Directive amending for the first time Directive 78/663/EEC laying
down specific criteria of purity for emulsifiers, stablizers, thickeners and gelling
agents for use in foodstuffs. This proposal is designed to amend Directive
78/663/EEC by introducing certain technical amendments in respect of the criteria of
purity for the substances mentioned, i.e.: alginic acid and alginates, xanthan gum,
powdered cellulose, sucroglycerides, propylene-glycol esters of fatty acids, ammonium
phosphatides, polyglycerol polyricinoleate, sorbitan monosterate, sorbitan
tristerate, sorbitan tristerate, sorbitan monolaurate, sorbitan monooleate and
sorbitan monopalmitate.

European Economic Community. The Commission of the European Economic Community has
proposed a Council Directive amending Directive 78/664/EEC laying down specific
criteria of purity for antioxidants which may be used in foodstuffs. This proposal
is designed to a) prohibit D, L-Tartaric acid and salts thereof as being a "substance
that can augment the antioxidant effect of other substances", b) include hydrolyzed
lecithins under the heading "Lecitin. E 322"; and c) to extend to propylene glycol
the provisions regarding specific criteria of purity which are applicable through
the Community.

London International Frozen Food Fair

The London International Frozen Food Trade Fair will be held at the Grosvenor House

A Free Overseas Trade Service

A monthly newsletter called Contacts for U.S. Farm Products can help you introduce
your products to foreign buyers. A description of your products, address, bank
reference, phone, and telex or cable address is listed in this bulletin which is sent
to USDA's representatives overseas who, in turn, distribute it to importers in their
country of assignment. Interested buyers will then contact you. If interested in

Department of Agriculture, or equivalent, located in your State capitol.
