Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As required
of all signatories to the GATT Standards Code, this notification of foreign
proposed standards-related rules has been provided for the information and comment of
interested agencies and firms. The Technical Office invites inquiries
from anyone who believes that any of the proposed regulations notified under
this heading could cause a trade problem. Questions can be referred to

Japan. The Japan Ministry of Health and Welfare has proposed an amendment to
the Food Sanitation Law. This amendment proposes (1) to prohibit the use of









of nicotinic acid and nicotinamide with respect to meat, fresh fishes, shellfishes
and whale meat, and (2) to establish a maximum permissible level (2,000 PPM as
sLlfur dioxide) for the residues of sulfur dioxide where the following chemicals
are used for dried fruits (except for raisins): sodium bisulfite, sodium sulfite,
sodium sulfur dioxide (sic), sodium hyposulfite, sulfite acid (anhydrous) (sic), or
potassium metabisulfite.

Japan. The Japan Ministry of Health and Welfare has proposed an amendment to the
standards and specifications on soft drinks and fruit juice ingredients of the
Food Sanitation Law. This amendment will (1) revise specifications of composition
of soft drinks; (2) revise standards of manufacture of soft drinks; (3) revise
standards of storage concerning soft drinks as well as standards of soft drink
packages; and (4) establish specifications of composition and standards of
manufacture concerning fruit juice ingredients.

Japan. The Japan Ministry of Health and Welfare has proposed an amendment to
the standards and specifications of food, food additives, etc. of the Food
Sanitation Law. This amendment will establish the standards on dissolution of
arsenic, lead, cadmium, antimony, phenol, formaldehyde epichlorohydrin, vinyl
chloride monomer and residue on evaporation concerning cans used for packing
of food.

National Association of State Departments of Agriculture. A compilation of
