Foreign Trade Development
New Italian requirement for 30 percent of value deposit. Recent
strengthening of the dollar versus European currencies and continuing
balance of payments problems caused Italy to impose by decree a 30 percent
of value deposit requirement on most imports involving foreign currency
outlays. Aimed among other things at curbing speculation against the lira,
the requirement, which specifically exempts petroleum and wheat imports, is
that traders, buyers and Italians travelling abroad deposit without
interest for 3 months in the Bank of Italy a lira sum equivalent to 30
percent of the foreign currency purchase involved. At current interest
rates, the measure is estimated to amount to a 2 percent cost increase of
the import involved.
